The plan now is to push him ahead till It is determined whether it is possible to elect him or not, and Jn event of fallure to take up Some other man. The halfbreeds admit that they have had no encouragement from Gover- Zor Cornell, and have been giving him votes with the view of creating suspicions on the et of Mr, Conkling that Cornell 1s false to im and bring abouta quarrel between them in ‘hope that tn that event Mr. Cornel! will openly OiglLt Conkling. That is the meaning of the Cornell votes and talk, and the governor, being informed, is likely to be more decided the other ‘ay. ‘The half-stalwarts started a paper this morn- ing for signature, requesting the senate and assembly caucus Committees to call a jotut caucus in the usual way. This, they hold, ts the only way that the dead-lock can be orokea, as without a caucus no person can get votes enough to elect him. The halfbreeds are sitll afraid of a caucus. Thetr leaders state that they are afraid of g secret baliot and the nomi. nation of Conkling, and they therefore oppose the caucus, but content themselves in appea!- ing for a concentration of votes, but are tna- ble to combine the anti-Conkling vote. The stalwarts have decided to support Mr. Weodin’s proposed rules for the government of the prcceedings of the joint convention, and make them stronger, if posstbie. The Express, the Conkilog organ, this morn- ing says: forced adjournment Of the lezis- lature, with the afd of democrats, must not be thought of.” It charges the responstollity of tbe cead-lock on the uamiaistration mea, who refuse to settle party differences in a caucus tn the usual way; and there is but one way to get out of the Geat-lock, and that fs to hold a cia. cus. It adds:—“To prevent a caucus is to pre- Vent an election; therefore, no republican can possibly secure eighty-one votes without the operation of a caucus, unless all voluntarily agree to abide by the decision of a majority. Can this be breeds stoutly assert that will not submit to the majority in the event that it is agai: at them? For the failure to elect thus far itis admitted that the halfbreeds are solely re- sible, and they will be alone to blame if no choice is effected. Secretary Wiadon, Coliector Robertson's superior officer, says that the election of Conkling and Platt is preferable to the present condition of affairs. Hold a cau- cus and close out the controversy.” Mr, Platt returned here last night, and Mr. Conkling and Vice President Arthur have be-n telegraphed for to come to Albany this afier- noon.
