A Loan Exhibition of paintings and other works of art was opened a few days since at Johnstown, Pa., ex-Representative Morrell presiding over the initiatory ceremonies, Over 1.000 objects are included in the exhibition, and the average of merit 1s said to be a high one. — Miss Adamine Sindberg,of Copenhagen, who has, we believe, painted in this country for some time, exhibits in Tremblys window, on 7th street, between D and E, some very clever ant. mal painting in coe of dogs and the por. traits of several famous horses, notably one of Gen. Beale’s “Golddust.” Miss Sindberg’s studio in this city 1s at 1416 N street, though she expects to leave — Denmark shortly, to revura bere possibly in the fall. — ofthe cope = at least one American artist in the present Salon the critic of the London errs speaks in high praise. In regard to Miss Gardner's contribution it says: “‘Far from Home,’ ts decidedly one of the very best pictures of the year, and even seems to excel the many charming compositions of thts gifted lady waich attract Crowds around her cauvas at every ex- bibition.” After this he on and gives a full and glowing description of the painting. —Miss Lizzie Brewer, of Capitol Hill, will spend the summer sketching at Mt. Desert and } Deer Island, Maine. Except at the reception of the Art Club, we believe Miss Brewer has never publicly exhibited her work, but that shown | there made such favorable impressions thai her friends feel very sanguine of her future suLctSS. She expects to ‘Sane back from the north a large number of atuabe sketches ant 8 fee when she returns to Washington in the fa —The British Society of Painter-Ecchers has invited Messrs, Henry Farrer, A. F. Bellows, F. S. Church, Thomas Morar, Mary Nimmo Moran, K. Swain Gifford, J. M. Falconer and James D. Smilile, who were among the prominent Ameri- Can contributors tothe first annual exhibition of the Society, to become Fellows. Tanis 1s properly regarded as a very just compliment to the artists named, all of whom are = home &S possessing a high order of talent as cheis. —No first-class medals for painting were awarded by the French Salon this year. Whether this is because the pictures exhibited Were not up to the standard of former years or Decause the jury was more exacting this year than usual, does not Legend appear, but the later 18 understood to be the cause, Of the second class medals. one was taken by Mr. Joba S. Sargent, who is set down as an American, Although of American patronage, Mr. Sargent Was born and has been educated in Europe, only making brief visits to this country. ie Was a pupil of Carolus Duran. —Mr. Launt Thompson, who executed tho Scott statue in the Soldier's Home grounds, near this city, has nearly finished his compett- tive model for a statue of Gen. Frank P. Blair, which, 1 is proposed, shall be set up io St. Louis. The likeness 1s satd to be good, and the pose €asy and natural Mr. Wilson McDonald, another New York sculptor, 1s also engaged on & model for the same purpose. Gen. Blair was @ good subject for a striking and picturesque piece of statuary, and those haviny charge of the matter ought’ to make no contract ror the statue until they are well convinced that they Will get @ creditable work of art. —St. Gaudens’ new statue of Farragut in New York is well received generally, Dut it does not have entirely fair sailing. One critic, we observe, attacks the carelessness of the artist in making the wind blow the skirts of the coat oLe way, while the hair is tossed by itina twtally different direction. A more serious crit- icism is that s0 much attention has been paid to decorative and pictorial effect in the acces- sories that the statue as such, and the work as @ whole lose in dignity and character when tested by the higher canons of art. This view would seem to be justliled by the pictures of the statue which have been printed in the iljus- trated magazines aud newspapers. — Of the sixty-seven American artists who exhibit in the French Saion this year only two painted American subjects. These were Mr. Bolton Jones, who 1s represented by a winter scene near New York, and Mr. C. T. Webber, who sent ina Loulsiana river scene with char: acteristic figures. If our artists who desire to exhibit their work abroad would confine themselves to home subjects, with which they are or have the opportunity to be thoroughly familiar, it is not unlikely that they would not oniy paint better pictures, but at the same ume stand higher in the opinion of European artists, allot whom Consider it both a pleasure andaduty to hold thelr own couatry above every thing else. — The Illustrated Catalogue of the Paris Si- lon, (for 1851), of which Mr. J. W. Bouton, of New York, is the American publisher, ts a pub- Ucation of very considerable interest to the general public, 25 weil as of great value to Srtists. In addition to the names of all the contributing artists and a full descriptive title of the forty-three hundred works of art exhio- ited in the Salon this year, it contains spirited reproductions in fac simile, aicer the original crawings by the arilsts themselves, of nearly four hundred of the best paintings and statuary in the collection. These sketches give one a tar better Idea of the motive and characteristics of a given effort than can be gained by reading whole columns of correspondence from Paris, anes Price, which may be advanced later on, 1s Alexandria Affairs, [Reported for The Star.) The Herald correspondent, who has confi- dential relations with the Conkling men, sup- Plies the following gossip: “There is no mat ter which creates more attention at the hands Of the politicians in Albany than that which Telates to the position of the Governor of the In order to fully understand the posi- Uon of affairs at the present moment It will De necessary to go Dack A Short time. When Sena- tor Conkling was first elected to the U. S Senate Mr. Cornell exercised considerable in fluence in his party's councils. He was connect ed, 1 believe, with the republican stave commit. teé, but at ‘any rate contributed, It is said, something to Mr. Conkling’s canvass. Mr, Cor nell became surveyor of the port of New York, abd subsequently was removed by President® Hayes. Senator Conkling had him nominated for governor and he was elected. He conducted bisown campaign. The next event of poilti- Cai importance was the re-election of Senator ing. He was returned by a unanimous vote, Later the struggle for Senator Kernan's seat in the United States Senate ensued. Gov. Corbell and his friends put forth all their sirepgth to elect Mr. Thos. C. Platt. Gen. Arthur, on the contrary, supported Mr. Richard Crowley. Senator Conkling took no part in the contest, but remained away from the state cepltal. Mr. Platt was elected by a combina. tion with the half-breeds, Whether or not the proms: made any pledges to these men Is Rot own, Dut li is whispered that he committed bimseli in various ways to Judge Robertson and other leaders.
