THE EVENING STAR! WASHINGTON THURSDAY...... May 12, 1881. CROSBY &. In the firat place, accord- Ing to Mr. Froude himself, he once advised Mr. Carlyle not to authorize the publication of the reminiscences in the form they were left; but in this view Mr. Carlyle did not concur. But even had full discretion been allowed to Mr. Froude, it 1s not easy to see how he would have been justified in changing or omitting any- thing. To have altered or withheld any part would have been alike unfair to Mr. Carlyle and to that gentleman's readers, Mr. Carlyle knew very well what he wrote, and why he wrote it; and ff there was anything he did not want to | appear he should and most likely would have | destroyed it himself. But this he did not do even after being advised to that ena. As the | matter stands, therefore, Mr. Carlyle must be | understood as having painted his own portrait and the portraits of his friends exactly as he ‘wanted them to appear to those wh? might see them, and Mr. Froude had no right, expressed or implied, to make any change In the pictures. It Mr. Carlyle’s own work expos:d his true character and showed him fn a less favorabie aspect than he had always appeared to his ad- mirers, s0 much the worse for Mr. Carlyle, but so much the better for the rest of the world It, after all, ts only interested in seeing a man ily is, and knowing what he really ‘The addresses deliverea at the Cowpens cen | tennial yesterday were by Thomas Wentworth | Higginson, one of the most advanced of Mass2- | chusetts “radicals,” and Senator Wade Hamp- | ton, one of the most prominent representatives of thesouth. Each fought gallantly for his respective section during the rebellion, but there was not the slightest difference of opin- fon between them in regard to the glory and deur of the revolutionary struggle and the ficent future of the republic established sgle. Slowly but surely the bitter memories of the rebellion are dying out, and in | a generation or two the great struggle will be looked upon by north and south with the sam> placent feeling that the Eagitsh and Scotch come) hold tn regard to thelr old hot warfare, estified to themutual bravery of the ian —_———_---—_____ Warm weather {s upon us inearnest. At 7 ‘lock this morning the thermometer marked ‘3 degrees in Washington. In New York city the heat was six degrees above Washington, the thermometer indicating 79 in that city at 7 a.m. In Toledo, where the lake breezes are Supposed to keep things cool, the register was vi degrees. The wide open streets of Washing- ton, and their plan of intersection at different angles, give opportunity for free circulation of alr and full ventilation. Consequently, in hot weather, there are fewer cases of sunstroke here in proportion to the population than In cities much further north. ———_~<re-—___. The democratic state central committee of Virginia yesterday decided not to change the date formeiy fixed for the state convention to an earlier day. The convention had been called for August ith, and subsequent to the call the Teadjusters selected an early day in June for thetr state convention. Tuts rendered some of the democrats uneasy. They urged that the readjusters should not be permitted to get two months start in organizing their campaign and preparing Yor the November fight. Appeals for an earller convention were so numerous that the state committee held another meeting to consider the propriety of a change of date. The determination to adhere to the first-named date postpones the heat of the Virginia contest ‘until September and shortens the struggie. —\~<re-__. itis good news that the captatas of some of the ocean steamers are to be prosecuted for Violating the laws against overcrowding eml- grants. With all the protection that wisely- framed aud well-enforced laws can give them, the lot of steerage passengers at sea Is hard enough; when such provistons are neglected or violated the horrors of their ocean voyage are Uttle less than those of the Infamous “middle Passage” of the old days of slave-trading. ——~--_____. Massachusetts is preparing to take the field im the cause of civil service reform, and she will marshal her political hosts for a conquest of the United States. Reform associations, composed of men of both parties, are organiz- ing, and Senator Pendleton ts announced as one Of the friends of the cause who will, at an early day, lift up his eloquent volce in its behalf. | Ex-Secretaries Bristow and Schurz are also supporters of the movement.
