Editor Star: It is a matter of interest to know that the Chinese tea plant is being culti- ‘Yated in this country, but it certainly cannot now be considered a novelty, seeing that it has Deen a subject of governmental ald for the past ire of a century. It is well known that Broder years previous to the organization mat of Agriculture the tea — was ga cxtenaively introduced by the Patent authorities, and ever since the above depart. ment was established it has been engaged in growing tea plants and making annual distri- tions of tuem in regions where they would flourish. It is also a matter of record ‘that the department has from time to tim, during the = fifteen years, received sampies of prepared mm the southern states, waich have o2en tested, mand pronounced of excellent quality. ‘Many of these samples were received from the game plantation which furoished the teaa re- cently tested in this ana other cities, and which are erroneously stated as comiog from a gov- eroment plantation. It appears, however, that the present Commissioner of Agricalture ts de- Sirous of tndividualizing bimself as the intro- aucer of this industry, completely ignoring the Work of Fis predecessors In office, of watca he Bow makes avail, and to whose efforts he t3 wholly and entirely indebted for the opportunt- ty of seeing a sample of so-called American te. It is not a commendable practice for an offizer of the government _to end2avor to make a pre- tentious claim to whatever of good has resulted from the far-seeing and carefully wrought out plans of ces in Office, and it is es- unpardonable when, as in this cage, the ehergies of the present Commissioner of Agricniture have been mainly directed to the work of depreciating the actions of his prede- cessors. He evidenty soon learned that it was much easier to Ond fault with the work which —_ been greg eee by = department than suggest 01 ugurate improvements upon ie as is published reports amply cor aa vat Muza.
