The Matter of American Tea. ‘The examination in New York last week of American grown tea produced a less favorable report tha@ the tests made In this city a few days before. This was probably a disappotnt- ment to Commissioner Le Duc, but it can hardly be considered surprising. Neither Should it be regarded as discouraging. Tue dealers and experts of New York are more familiar with the teas of China and Japan, and ‘were naturally influenced im their taste and Judgment by the standards usually applied to ‘those products, whereas the sample3 submit- ted were of the varieties grown in Iadla, which, Whether as good or not, or better, as those accustomed to their use generally claim, are Bomething quite different, both in flavor and Strength. In addition to this cireumsta.1ce tue Tact must not be overlooked that the Importers of New York have their business cow>ina- tions al! made and their capital ali tr- ‘Vested in foreign grown teas, and their feelings would therefore naturally be enlisted in their own Interests and against aa en‘er- Prise which might in time impair the valu2 of thelr business plants. There 1s, therefore, a3 ‘we have said, no ground for discouragem2at in the New York verdict. There 1s no doubt that good tea can be grown In certain parts of the United Staves, and the flavor of such fs better than that which 13 imported, since 1t 1s notor- Jous that the quality of all varieties 1s materl- ally injured by a sea voyage. Besides, the Strergth and flavor of all teas depend greatly On their freshness, and this can always be Secured In a home grown article. No such uarantee can be counted upon in regard to Imperted cargoes, which are oftener stale and Musty than otherwise. Ithas been the fashion, ‘we know, to ridicule and balittle tha persistent endeavors made by the Agricultural Dapart- ment In the direction of producing American teas; Dut such attacks, while some of thom have been witty, are neither wise nor patriotic. ‘On the other hand, every encouragement ought to be extended to so praiseworthy an end, and At will be tfme enough to deride the Depart- Meni’s ¢fforts and pronounce them a failure ‘when it fs conclusively proven that they can- Rot be made a success, . —_——+<ee--—__ ‘The different telegraph companies having ‘Wires in Pa‘ladsiphia have applied to the city council for the privilege of digging trenches for the purpose of running their wires under- ground. The tmpression is that the privilege ‘Will begranted. Now that the telegraph com- panies have begun to recogonize, and, no doubt, to feel, the public condemnation of aerial wires, perbaps they will abate the Dulsance without walting for the compulsion Of laws. The action of the U. 8. grand jury of Colorado in finding Indictments against Commissioner Meacham and Agent Berry as accessories, and Saforonau and ome of his sub chiefs of the Ute nation as principals, on the charge of mur- @ering Jackson, who shot and killed Chiet Jobrson in September last, ts believed here, especially by the friends of the Indians, to be &n important part of a program to force a war ‘with the Utes, in order to break the agreement ‘With that people and compel their removal from Colorado. —oos New York doesn’t intend to be outdone much by Chicago, if she can help it. She had her first case of sunstroke yesterday. This isons day bebind her western rival, but in the latter anstance the attack will likely be fatal, while In the other it was not. This will propabiy ba regarded 23 restoring the equilfbrium. - Dorsey cught to feel happy at last.
