The Largest Circular Sewer Ev: = Constructed. . DRAINAGE OF NORTHEAST WASHINGTON. ‘The work of constructing the second section of the Boundary street intercepting auxiliary sewer in the northeastern section of the city, ig progressing steadily and satisfactorily,- under the present contractor, W. C. Murdock. THE EVENING STAR. EDAY..... “May 6, ISSI. The Weather. OPPIcs OF THR CHIEF SIGNAL OFFICER, Wasuixeron, D. C., May 6, 1851, 9:30 a mm. For the middie Atlantic states, partly cloudy weather, and occasional rain, easterly, shifting, southerly winds, lower barometer. stationary or higher temperature. Special Weather Bullctine ‘The ehief signal officer furnishes the follow- ing to the press: The barometer is highest in the Canadian maritime provinces, and lowest in Manitoba. The temperature has remained nearly stationary. Cloudy and_ threaten! Weather, with rain, prevails in New Englan and the middle Atlantic states. South- erly winds continue in New England, the northwest and the west guif states. East- erly winds In the middie Atlantic states and T. Loane being the conti for the outiet section of 1,700 feet, with an inside diameter of 23 feet. Mr. Loane after Cogremer | the work failed to comply with the termsof his contract, and it was given to Mr. who fs now the re contractor outlet section, and also for the next section of 2,100 feet, with adiameter of 22 feet inside. This is the section upon which Mr. Murdock is now working, he being a su! tractor. The neat section, which has recently been awarded to Messrs. Neltzy & ucker, 1s 2,300 lineal feet, With an interior diameter Of 20 feat, and ex- tends from 12th to Sth street east. These con- tractors have not yet commenced their work, and probably will not do much until the work on Mr. Murdock’s section shall have advanced to a point which will enable the water to be turned in without interfering with his work. ‘This 1s the most interesting sewer work ever boipekerg a in Construction in either ancient or modern times. It 1s the largest circular sewer ever constructed, and the thorough manner of the work and quality of the material used renders it an object of great Interest to builders and engi- neers, The great extent of this work and dif- ficult nature Of the excavations necessarily makes its execution slow, and it will probabiy require several years for its completion. The quantities of the several kinds of work oa the section just let to Messra. Neltzy & Acker are estimated to embrace 100,000 cubic yards of excavation, 5,000 cubic yards of concrete ma- sonry, 5,350 cubic yards brick masonry, 4,000 equare yards trap rock masonry, with 16,000 cubic yards of surplus excavation to be hauled off. The sewer is built on a concrete iounda- tion, with the lowest portion of the invert laid with trap rock blocks, in*order to resist the immense friction of rock and sand which flows through this sewer in times of heavy rain sterms. Water tight work 1s almed at, and to. Secure this none but the best quality of mate- Tial is used. The trap rock blocks are laid in a thick bed of concrete masonry, the blocks not Jess than four inches in width nor eight inches pi has falien 11 inches at St. Paul, where it is now 5 inches above the danger Ine; It has risen 27 inches at Dubuque; it is 4 feet 7 Inches above the danger line and rising siowly at St. Louis: tt 1s 2 teet 6 Inches above and rising at Cairo; 3 feet 4 Inches above at Helen: foot 5 inches above at Vicksburg; it is 2inches below the danger line at New Or- leans, and 5 inches below at Memphis. The indications are that partly cloudy or cloudy Weather. with rain, will prevatl in New Eng- land and the middie Atlantic states to-day, and that fair weather will prevall in the south Atlantic states to-day and to-morrow. The Missouri will probably continue to fall. The Mississ{ppi will probably continue to fall at St. Faul and rise at Dubuque, Lacrosse and Cairo.
