Potomac Fisheries, INCREASED CATCH TAIS SEASON. ‘The arrivals of fish reported by Mr. J. R Sut- ton, Inspector of marine products, for Monday were 300 bunch figh, 23,338 shad, and 40,574 herring. Yesterday there arrived 1,009 buncn fish, 13,251 shad, and 403.920 herring. The suc- Ces Of the fisheries thus far has far excepded the expectations of fishermen. The arrivals thus for of herring, for this season, amount to 4 950,455, against 6,558,839 for the entire season lastyear. Tne increase of shad is about in the same Laing niengen Some of the fishing shores, however, have not beenso fortunate as others, While the increase of fish has b2en very gceat, the prices have ruied low in proportion to the increase, and after the costs of running the shores are deducted, there 13 but litle margin of proiits for tue owners or lessees. Many shad are bing packed fn salt and sold to the farmers, bat ouly the surplus ones after supplying the markets orth with the fresh shad. Packing in ice and sending to other cities has become quite a profitable bustness, but the unusual number Caught this season ‘has made the price to2 low tq afford the profits of past seasons iu this branch. No sturgeon have thus far been caught. The owner of the fish wharf has arrenged with farmers this year to cart off the offal tor use as a fertilizer. One dollar per load 1s paid for bts offal, and it 1s said it is the bast end cheapest fertilizer that can be got for a gcod corn crop.
