For some time past the star route ring have been threatening if the administration did not let up on them to publish a damaging letter written by Gen. Garfield last summer. The administration did not let upon them and the alleged letter has been published in a round about way ina Chicago paper. It is as tollows: Mryor, O., Aug. 23, 1850, My Dzar Husssut: Yours of the 19th inst. received and contents noted. Pleass say to Brady that i oy he will give us all the assist- ance possible. I think he can help effecitvely. Please tell me how the departments generatiy redoing. As ever yours, J. A. GARFIELD, Hon. J. A. Btsssi,, Washington, D. C. The Chicago paper states that during the campaign of 1880 Brady, of the Post Office de- partment, being called on to levy contributions on bis friends, refused unless invited to do so by the republican candidate for President. In response toa letter of explanation from Mr. Hubbell the note above givea 1s sald to have been written. Supposing the letter to be gen- uine, there is nothing about it that seems to compromise the President in any way with the postal ring. On the contrary, the fact that Within a month of his inauguration as Presi- dent he discharged Brady and put the whole Sang on trial, despite ail their threats, is proot positive that they had no hold upon himor power over him, and that he was ready to act decisively n exposing and stopping the plun- dering operatioss without the sitghtest regard to the question wno m!ght be affected by the disclosures. ——————— ‘The Banner Hailroad State. in addition to fturn!saing soldiecs, statesmen Sd ab occasional oftle-holder ior the country at large, it 1s claimed for Ohio that she Is the best supplied with rallroad facilities of any State In the union. The claim ts probably well founded. According to a map recently pre- pared by the Rallway Commissioner of that State, at least one well-equipped and regularly operated railroad runs through or tntoevery one of her elgty-elght counties save one. The exe ception is Morgan county, and even she ts touched on one coruer by the Iron track. She is likewise traversed nearly through her center by & navigable river, which empties into the Ohio on the south, ani connects her with the canal system of the state on the north, so that the situation of this less favored locality, as regards the rest of the world, ts not so much isolated as one might suppose. Of course many of the counties !n the state are traversed bya Lumber of independent lines, and Franklin county, in which Columbus, the capital of the State, Is situated, has, if we are correctly in- formed, nearly twenty separate roads within her limits. if ts to this gen. ercus aud general distribution of trans- portation ites, added to her vast and nearly balanced agricultural, mineral and manufacturing resources and interests, that the growth and relative Importance? of Ohio Is largely due. Cheap transportation has added greatly to the value of these Interests, and has ‘thus Increased the wealth of the state and the Prosperity of her people. Yet, well supplied as Ohio {s to-day in this respect, her work of butlding ratlways has by nO means stopped. A number of new roads are ow In course of construction, and many more are projected, a large proportioa of which will doubtless be bulit, if good times contiaue for | two or three years longer, as they probably will One healthy feature about the majority of these new enterprises is thse fact that they are not intended to or competitors of the great trunk lines now in existence. They are generally pushed forward by local enter- prise and local capital, for the deveiopment of the immense iron eposits which abound in many p state, and espe- ctally In the ea: prn actions. ‘This gives permanent value, even though their shares may never | become spsculative stoc! The President has forcibly urged the necessity for the consid- erating of the business submitted by him, and itis due to bim that executive sessions have been commenced. This action of the Senate, however, does not signity that the contest over the election of offivers has yet terminated. Some of te republican Senators openly declare 1m favor of resuming this fight a3 soon as the public cervice shall be relieved of its embarrass- ment by the confirmation of such nominations ag are necessary to fill vacancies. The plan of action ratified by the repablican caucus looks” to this end, and we may have the Senate with us all summer yet. Should the Senators remain through the warm season, they will, no doubt, become impressed with a realizing sease of the Bulsance of the Potomac flats, and will perhaps be Inclined to give some attention to the matter of its abatement.
