THREE CARD MONTE MEN TACKLE AN OLD SECRET SERVICE MAN, WHO THINKS HS BAS THEM, BCT 18 FOOLED AFTER ALL. A gentleman from Indianapolis, Ind., an old secret service man, now in the employment of several railroad companies, oe Swroning towards the Capitol building when @ rurat | looking individual accosted bim, asxing, “What knd of a building fs that?” polating’ to the Capito. The answer was “Dal 9.” Tha seeming countryman then sald: nap3 you are a stranger {n the city, the same ag myself,” and was answered In the affirmative. He then said that a friend of his had promised to mect | bim and show bim around, but was late | coming. While talking, nis friend put In an Eh erty nag and he remarked: ‘‘Here he comes, talk of the devil and he always appears.” {utro- duet fons then followed, and It was remarked that all the great men had lett town for the day to witness the unvelling of a statue across the river, abd that the Capitol was shat w | day. So it was concluded they would go over the river. They went to the banks of the Potomac near the long bridge, and got a col- ored man to take them across ina boat. On arriving Qn the other side they went upon ‘the banks of the canal, and were waikiog to- wards the mans‘on at Ariington, when they met a man with @ heavy overcoat. He taiked like @ drover, saying he was from Kentucky, and wanted to know aow to get to Georgetown. They to'd him he had passed there. He the: commenced to give the Yunkees’ fits for rov- bing him in Phfiadelphia. He haa sola his cattie, he said, put they did not get all his money; they had only beat him out of $310, He then produced some cards and offered to give the men an tilustration of how It had been done, remarking that he would ‘give lt to the boys” when he got home. He insisted on showing how they worked the gameon him. ‘Thela- danspolis man, the tntended victim, knowin; eomething of rogues, cheertull replied, “all right.” The drover got_ down and commen:e Work, Dat oun found his game was ‘no good. The Indianapolis man haa by this time recoz- nized the drover as an old rogue, by the nam of Canada Bill, and quletiy remarked:—' Bill, you are a good way from home, but I know ycu.” Bil) quickly looked up in astonishment and put down his money. ‘The secret service man then told the two men, who took him #erogs the river, to at once take him back, aud that quickly, or he would make daylight shine \nrough them; that he understood their game from the first; and that he “wanted them” on the Washington side. He completely took the party by storm—the drover making a bee line towards Georgetown, while, with revolver in band, be compelled the other two men to make a forced marcn back to Washington, and oring- ing them up to the monument grounds tarned them over to a man tn blue clothing, whom he Supposed to be a policeman, and then took tne 2 o'clock train for the west.
