When the terms of the treaty were first made public It met with considerable criticism and some coademnation from the Pacific coast people. The recent tntlux of large numbers of Chinese has apparently overcome the oppoal- ton, and now the expressions of opinion are very generally in behalf of the adoption of the treaty. Two vessels landed last week at San Francisco with nearly two thousand Chinese immigrants on board. The discovery that smallpox existed among the Chinese caused considerable alarm and indignation.
