The number of new advertisements printed on that day was 183—the largest num- ber ever printed in a sing’ tssue of the paper. Advertisers will, therefore, confer a favor by sending in their orders at the earliest practl cable moment, to Insure insertion and claast- fcation in next Saturday's enlarged and extra aitien. The strike of street car employé3 in St. ouls has developed a lawless coxadition of fairs, which threatens all the Interests of th? city. The strikers, numbering over 1,000, have kept within the bounds of a lawful ex- ercise of their right to refuse to work, aga means of redressing grievances, but the lawless Vagrant and criminal classes of the cliy seen to have combined to tak situation. Monday the city was almost in the Possession of these class93. M903, armed with | Diudgeons aud missiles, refused to disperse at the commands of the police, and even realated the latter. The encroachments of mobs upon’ the rights of people and property quickly en- couraged all the rough elements of the city to assert deflance of the lawful authorities, and the situation was full of danger. In order to suppress this lawless outbreak the people are urged to join in supporting the authorities, and the strikers adopted a resolution pledging thetr aid to the poite: ————2—___ The organized democratic opposition in New York elty to Tammany has developed a strength that Was surprising even to those who origt- nated abd managed the movement. At the primary elections held Tuesday night over .000 votes were polled, more than three times the number cast at the last Tammany prima- ties. Maby prominent democrats, who bad never before attended primaries, turned out 7 and worked with a will, The delegates elected will manage the party affairs until the regular primaries are held next fail. With neariy one- halt of the Tammany society arrayed agalast Jobn Kelly, and the opposition of a completely organized anti Kelly democracy to fight him at every step, itis difficult to concelve how the ‘boss can hold out much longer. The better ele- ments of the party are determined to crush Kelly, because he invariably uses his political Influence for the gratification of selfish ends. As long as he fs permitted to control a few thou- sand votes which he can arbitrarily command there is. a stumbling-biock to democratic suc- cese. +--+ The cities of New Orleans and Vicksburg, distant two hundred and forty-three miles from each other, are connected by telepaone, which {3 deseribed as working most satisfactorily, Merchants of Vicksburg order gods from Now Orleans by telephone, and the first order of Unis character seut over the line was distinct'y beard and promptly filed. The plantations along the river, and in some cases back from the river in Louisiana, are being connected with New Orieans by telephone, and It 1s satd that the exchange in that city will embrace nearly ail the state before a great while, —_—<o+—__. One of the results of the strike on the Si. Louts street ratlroads is to acquaint many of her citizens for he first time, on account of having to walk, with the shocking condition of the side walks tn that city, and demands for their Improvement are becoming quitecommon. It the foetwalks there are worse than those on Some of the most frequented streets of this city,—parts of Pennsylvania avenue, for ex- ample,—the pedestriaus of St. Louts are to be commiserated. The question of a revision of the tariff ia being discussed in a manner to indicate that the next Congress will feel the pressure in behalf of some action In regard to tt. Pro- tectionists are complaining of the Inequalities ard incongruities of the tariff, and during the ccming summer and fall it is quite probabie that some action will be taken by manz- facturers expressive of thelr wishes in regard to tariff changes. —_-+-e-—_____ The action of the republican caucus yester- day looks to a breaking of the dead-lock to the extent of acting upon some of the appoint- ments that can’t walt, and upon the Chinese treaty. horns again.
