The pressure upon the advertising columna ot Tas Sram on Saturday last was without precedent. The number of new advertisements printed on that day was 166. Advertisers will, therefore, confer a favor by sending in their orders at the earllest practicable moment, to insure insertion and cigasification in next Sat- urday’s enlarged and extra edition. The Railroad Boom. ‘The number of new railway compantes being organize: and chartered Is calculated to remove. tosome extent, the apprelension in te public mind of ccniinued monopolies in the railway ‘business of this country, There Is an abund- ance of money In the United States, and the amount ts increased with the arrival of almost every vessel from Europe. Hence, capital 13 seeking investment, and much of it 1s going into new railroad enterprises. Some portions of the United States, espec ally the northern and northwestern states, are pretty well covered with railway lines; but there ts plenty of room for more in an extensive and rapidly growing country lke ours. A large proportion of the money now being employed in the construction of railways Is devoted to the southwestern sec- tion of this country, which ts a great empire of Itself, possessing millions of acres of yet unculs tivated sofl, and almost incalculable resources Of wealth. In the bullding of new railways the owners of capital have not overlooked portions of the south, which promise an ample re- muneration for acdditional transportation facilities, Only a few months ago a number of northern capitalists combined with a few wealthy men of the south and formed a company for the construction of a line of rallroad from Atlsnta, Ga., to run due west to the Mississippi river. Work on the road was promptly begun, and 1s being pushed forward rapldiy at different points on the surveyed line. This road will extend through rich mineral sections, contair ing coal amd tron in abundance, and also through one of the largest cotton- growing regions of the south. A line of rail- way was projected from St, Louls, through Texas, to the Mexican border, and no difficulty was found in organizing a corapany for its con- Struction. Several companies for the erection of new telegraph lines have also been organ- ized and chartered within the past few months, aLd at least two of these companies have al- ready entered upon the work of construction, Large enterprises of this character are planned and entered upon with a promptness that indi- cates present prosperity and entire confidence in Its continuance and in the future growth and development of this country. ————~<-—__. The report of the state superintendent of public schools of Georgia for the years of 1379 and 1ss0 has just been Issued, and {t shows a very gratifyh progress in the public educa- ton. Since 1S71 the number of pupils, both white and colored, has steadily increased with each year, and the school facilites have been just as steadily enlarged and improved. In 1st1 the number of white pupils attending the pub- ie schools was 42,914, and of colored only 6,664; im 188) the number of whites had Increased to 0,134, and the colored to 96.429, making a to- Tal of 236 563 for last year, against 49,576 for IstI. Last year $530,000 were expended on the public schools, and it is estimated that the rev- enue for educational purposes will be increased this year by $330,000 from liquor lcenses alone, which, under the law now, go into the school fund. The exceptional number of 6,591 immigrants arrived at the port of New York on Tuesday. tis probable the arrivals in 131 will largely exceed those of any former year. Thug far they exceed those of 1580 by nearly 50, It it evident that the distress fn Ireland and the world gen will give a 8 Impetus to the movement tis direction, : The managers of the New York World's Fair project are still trying to galvantze the corpse. but the probability is that the funeral will take place next Wednesday wher the committees have a final conference.
