Almost » Coal Famine, CAUSES OF THE SCAKCITY. The scarcity of coal in Washington borders upon a famine in that article. None of the dealers have any Lykens’ valley of the stove size, and but few have furnace coal. One of the largest coal firms in the city dia not have three tons of all varieties tn their yard this morning. Clarke & Given say that the pre- ent searcity of coal and the high prices that ruled during the winter are due, in the first pince, to the unusually early closing of navi- gation last winter. The dealers in Washing- ton, owing to the early freezing of the river, could not ‘get the supplies necessary to fur~ nish thelr patrons during the winter, After the Close of nayigation they were compeliad to depend upon the rallroads, and these corpora- u advantace of their opportuatty. & Given state that when their customers were calling for coal they had seventeen car- loads on the way; these loaded cars were shipped in due time from Baltimore over the B and 0. raiiroad, but before they reache. here the influx of travel to the inaasucatio set in. The railroad switched off the car loads cf coal and left them on the side trac for days. The dealers agree that the high prices and Searel’y are 0 ly to the railroad com- panies. TI companieg refuse positively to ‘rapsport coal from the nMnes except In such quantities as they choose, and this is always Tegulated by the tnordinate desire of the rall- Touds to bleed the people.
