In the afternoon session a memorial from the | North Presbyterian church, tn relation to the | pastor, was reported from the committee on | bis and overtures. It states that “a condition | of things exists among the members of the eburch which, in our opinion, 1s greatly detri- mental to the interests of true religion, and which tends to retard the work of Christ in this community; and that the origin of this extating Gissatisfaction 1s chietly traceable’to the marri- age of the pastor with a member of the Roman Catholic church, and, as a result thereof, some | of the members of this church have gone to | other churches. Others are anxiously walting. | in the hope that something will bs done to | bring relief.” ‘The memorial ts signed by A.M. | Sainon, C. Martin, Mary H.Martia, E Myers, A, M. The paster was represented by Mr. Kerr, who is one of the trustees, who read Irem the proceedings of the sessions that the subject had beea considered and fadefinttely postponed by a voto of 65 tos. Nothing had en shown affecling his integrity, and per- soual spite, be believed, to be at the bottom of it. He produced statistics showing that tho condition of the church has steadily improved, especially In regard to flaances, and its present indebtedness was not over $1,000, Mr. A. M. Salmon, for the petitioners, referred To the statistics read, and claimed that th church lad lost money since the pastor's m1 riage. He disclaimed on the part of the Uoncrs aby personal hostility, but claimed tat with a Catholic wife, holding te: exautly epposite those held by the pastor. it was not proper for him to preside over a Presbyterian congregation. Mr. Kamsdell, in ils own behalf, spoke of the church betng in an enfeebled condition when he was called to it, and acknowledged that his wife was a Cathoile, and he belfeved a Christian lady, to whom he was marrted by a minister of his wa faith (Rev. Dr. Patton.) Sie bad at- tended this church with all the regularity of other members, and also the weekly meetings, until It was suggested that her presence was Gistasieful to some at the latter, and she ceased her attendance at the weekly meetings. In answer to questions by Dr. Sunderland, he sald that she attended the confessional, but 1t was Gistastefulto him, - At the evening sesston the constderation of the complaint avalnst the pastor of the Nort cburch was resumed, Judge Drake offered tae following preamble and resolutions : ‘The Presbytery, without meaning to express apy personal censure upon Mr. Ramsdeil, or any rersonal reflection upon MMs wife, who 15 understood to be a very estimable lady, deem it their duty to make the following declaration and to take the following actio! First—We do declare our solemn judgment yterlan minister has amoral rigat to marry a Catholic woman, because 1t cannot fail to Weaken, and, perhaps, tinally destr his ministerial tniluenee to be so connected with one whose religious bellef teacnes her to regard all Protestants as heretics, Second—In our judgment it 1s an obstacie to the prosperity of any Presbyterian church for {ts pastor to Contract such an alliance. ‘Third—On this ground {t 1s ordered thatthe pastoral relation between Mr. Ramsdofl and the North Presbyterian chureh of Washingt be dissolved, and that a member of the oytery be appointed to declare the pulpit va- ean. ‘The subject was discu: when the meeting adjouri toa. m. to-day. THE PROCESDINGS TO-DAY. This morning the Presbytery resumed its | session. Rev. Jos. T. Kelly offered a sudstitute for Judge Drake's resolutions declaring tt as thelr ira conviction that marriages should not be contracted between Presbyterian minis and Inembers of the Roman Catholic chu: yet, in view of Mr. Ramsdell’s services to the church, and in view of the expressed wish of the majority of his church for a continuance of the pastoral relations, and !n view of the fa: ik until 11 o'clock, pears that his wife does not oppos Lim in his office work, they recommend ‘that the petitions: advance the spiritual interests of all part concerned in Ubis iaatter, do, under existiu: circumstances, perform their duties in and Jield their support to the church.” Mr. I. B. Linton addressed the meeting, say- Ing that a majority of the church desired to re- tain Mr. Kamsdell, and im the course of his ks he referred to the fact that this was not the first dissension of this kind; the wife of a former pastor baving been persectited by some of those who are now in a minority, and he was | forced by them to resigo. The majority now were perfectly well satisited with Mr. Ramsdei Mr. Salmon, for the petitioners, denied that there had been any persecutionof Mr. Masoa’s wife, and he denied that there was aay perse- cution bere personally. Dr, Sunderland asked if tt was held that the by his marriage had committed a sla? Mr. Salmon answered that they did not so hold, Lor did he consider it immoral.
