WHAT A STAR REPORTER ASCERTAINE! ‘Tuk StaR reporter learus that for som Weeks past there have been reports to Uen as to bad treatment of the children at the asylum, and that some days since a lady 1usbed into the parlor in much excitement and ct mar ded to see her three children, who it had been reported to her were horribly bruised. The children were at cuce sent for, and on entering the room the lady apologized for cém'ng OD such an errand, but the matron O: manded that she shou'd examine the bodies of the chilcrep, which she dd and left, satisfied that she had been misintormed. These complaints have not been continet 10 children in the hospital but bave been made in reference to some of those for whom homes have been found. A short time ago one of these children, tn the care of a citizen ot George- town, it was reported, had had her arm jerked out of place. One, of the lady managers in making an Investigation ascertatned that the girl bad a bruise op her shoulder caused by a fall when she was doing an errand for the party who made the complaint. MURDER AT MARTINSEURG.—ADOUt 7 o'clock last evening at Marunsburg, Va., Chas. Doug- lass, @ mulatto, accused Jerry Green, a negro, of breaking on his trunk and stealing there- from #25, aud drawing a pistol shot Green dad, the ball penetrating the eye. When Green was icked up he had his hand on his pistol, but it Ss claimed that Douglass killed him without provocation. Douglass was immediately ar- rested, and upon examination, admitted the killing. ‘The pockets of the murdered man Were searched, but only $1.5 was found, with a letter belonging to Douglass, Douglass was committed to await the action of the grand Jury. When Judge Parker took his place cn the bench there was a faint murmur of applause, which swelled in volume when Payne appeared with his counsel, Judge James Baker, of St. Louis, Colonel W. H. Olayton, prosecuting at orney, conducted the case for the government and made a speech of great lengti, consuming the greater part of the day. The defence filed a ‘ismurrer, which Judge Parker took under advisement, Teserving his decision till the May term of the court. Capt. Payne passed through this city to-day én rou'e for Kansas. He expresses contidence in a tri- umphant issue of the cause now pending. Mr, Smith stated that he went to Moore’s piace on the night that his porter Was assaulted there, but did not then know of the assault on the porter. Witness called for alfa dozen raw oysters, and after ea! them walked up to the bar and was told by defend- ant that the oysters were 2% cents. After remarking that that was a pretty steep price, he paid it, and Moore cursed him and Teacked down to get a weapon, when witness icked up @ bottle to defend if with, when @ Was selzed from behind by two men and Moore struck bim on the head with a bottle, knocking him senseless. Moore testified that the Lg once drew a knife, and then threat- ened to draw a pistol, when he (witness) threw the bottle and struck him. ‘The court said that as the tesilmopy showed that Smith drew a me Moore Was justified in throwing the bottle, and he would dismiss the case. Robert Smith’ was charged with assulttng’ another colored map, named Henry Peyton, by cut- ung him on the head with a knife. Peyton stated that he was ona drunk at the ume; that he cannot remember anything about it. Another witness stated that Smith cut Peyton several times with a knife.
