Pive republican members-elect of the next louse of Representatives have been promoted— ur to the Senate and one to the position of U minister to France. The vacancies must, in ~°cordance with law, be filled by special elec- Ucns, and upon the result of these elections the political complexion of the next House will de- pend. It is claimed by the democrats that no other repubifean can carry the dist: democratic and greenback vote combmed 1s somewhat in excess of the republican vote tn Mr. Concer’s district, and a fusion movemeat against the republicans has already been tnau- gurated there. Representatives Ladi and Murch €xpress the opinion that the fustoniats can elect a member to succeed Mr. Frye. In Mr. Mitchell's district in Pennsylvania the combined democratic and greenback vote is several thousand larger than the republican vote. As already stated, these tive spectal elections can determine the politica’ control of the House; If the opposition get four, or even Ubree of them, a combination would no doubt be effected that would prevent repub- lean supremacy. Including these five districts the republicans bad only 146 straight members Of the rext House, They relied. and still rely upon Mr. Smith, of Brooklyn, and several greenback members-elect of republican antece- dents to vote for republican organization. Should they lose three ot the vacancies 1t will reduce the reliable republican membership to 143.
