THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON THURSDAY Miarch 10, i881. CROSBY 8. NOYVES......Editor. ‘The Evening Star has « regular, perma- sent, bous daily clragiation more thus treble that of any other daily paper pab- Ushed in Washington, and equal te that of all the other daily papers here added te- Dusiness cap be sent day or night, free of charge. ‘The Double Sheet on Saturday. Owing to the extraordinary increase In the enlarged edition of THE STa® on Saturday, ad- vertisers are requested to send tn their orders at an early hour to insure insertion and proper classification. ‘Che House Vacancies and the Extra ion. Pive republican members-elect of the next louse of Representatives have been promoted— ur to the Senate and one to the position of U minister to France. The vacancies must, in ~°cordance with law, be filled by special elec- Ucns, and upon the result of these elections the political complexion of the next House will de- pend. If Congress should be convened ta extra session Dé fore these vacancies are fied the five would be fatal to republican con- ‘ore, this is an important matter in considerir< the advisability of calling an extra seseton of Vongress, A proclamation from the governor of a state directing a special election for Copzrcssmen must give the people of the atsirict thirty days’ notice. The governors of the states In whose delegations a vacancy « xists are all republicans, save one. Hence the pectal elections to choose a representative to ed Senator Hawley, from Connecticut; Senator Mitchell, of Pennsylvania; Senator Conger, of Michigan, and Minister Morton, of New York, could be called and tlie elections held by the middle of April But the governor of Maine is a democratic-greenbacker and he might Lot choose to hurry himself in issuing the writ of election for a successor for Mr. Frye, who {s soon to be elected U. S. Senator. Outside o* this calculation, however, comes the important question, “Can the repuDdilcans fill all these vacancies with men of thelr own | Mr. Morton has represented a district party?" tn New York city which contains a democratic majority, but bis popularity overcame this. It is claimed by the democrats that no other repubifean can carry the dist: democratic and greenback vote combmed 1s somewhat in excess of the republican vote tn Mr. Concer’s district, and a fusion movemeat against the republicans has already been tnau- gurated there. Representatives Ladi and Murch €xpress the opinion that the fustoniats can elect a member to succeed Mr. Frye. In Mr. Mitchell's district in Pennsylvania the combined democratic and greenback vote is several thousand larger than the republican vote. As already stated, these tive spectal elections can determine the politica’ control of the House; If the opposition get four, or even Ubree of them, a combination would no doubt be effected that would prevent repub- lean supremacy. Including these five districts the republicans bad only 146 straight members Of the rext House, They relied. and still rely upon Mr. Smith, of Brooklyn, and several greenback members-elect of republican antece- dents to vote for republican organization. Should they lose three ot the vacancies 1t will reduce the reliable republican membership to 143. Because of the importance of these spectai elections every inch of ground tn each district Will be contested. “Tne republicans and the ‘oppesition will each make the best fight possible. and the imporiant stake at issue will attract general interest to the result. In view of the probability or an extra session, It 13 likely these vacancies will be filled by the first of May. ‘The chances are favorable to the republicans in al} the districts, as they have the prest !geot success With them. ————<+e —__. committee on cities of the ‘w York fog telegraph wires In New York city to & latd underground. While the telegraph com- ;4bies profesg to be willing to substitute an ticeground system for the present pole ce, &@ little compulsion at the hands of | gislatures will hurry them along. The run- uing of wires across roofs of bulld!ngs, fre- quenuy regardless of the wishes of owaers, is an outrage wpon property. In New York city recently the owners of a fine butlding had the wires cut down because, in the first place, they were erected without tueir consent, and, in the second place, they were an injury to property, In St. Louts the head of a manufacturing com- pany gave the telegraph authorities one hour te remove the wires running over the company’s building, aeclaring at the same time that if not removed In that time they would be cut down by his orders. +--+ Walking matches seem to have “played out.” | The public taste has been surfeltea with this Sort of amusement, as 18 shown by the fact that Rowell and O'Leary have failed to draw paying crowds in New York. The big purses which have heretofore been divided among the walkers at the end of the match kept the sport alive. Many of the contestants would earn more in a week by tramping the sawdust than they could in a year at anything else. When the public ceases to attend, all that made walk- Ye matches attractive to the participants comes toan end, and the man who was wont to win the applause of thousands and receive Bumerous bouquets as a reward for ‘a lively spurt.” will retire to the obscurity of a street car driver and think of his past glory as he counts the time the weary mule makes over the beaten track, The Capit to be the play of Hamlet with the part of Ham- let omitted, but no doubt its readers, while missing a certain pungent flavor of Sarcastic wit tempered by humor peculiar to “D. P., will find the paper altogether quite up to its usual mark, in the hands of Mr. Buell, Mr. Dou, glass, ahd others of the staff, who have done a large portion of [ts most effective work for a long ume. —_—_re-—__. One by one the Mlusions of life vanish tnto thin air and fade away. It is now announced a selentific authority that the celebrated biue ky isn’t blue grass, at all, but something quite different. By and vy, we sup- pese, some fellow will be demonstrating that Bourbon whisky isn’t Bourbon whisky elthe: and.then what will there be lgt for a Kentuc san to believe tn? << At the special ¢lection which will take place In Indiana next Monday it will be decided whether Indiana ts to rematn longer an ““O:to- ter State,” that is to say, whether It shall con Unue to hold gubernatorial elections in Octoter, which ip the presidential years have such updue influence on the result in November. —~-re-__ + The most frequently consulted book in Wash- tgton just now ts the Blue Book.
