AGAINST A FIRE DEPARTMENT PARADS. The board of fire commlsstoners—Mes3rs, Collins, Bacon and Reed—to-day returned to the District Commissioners the invitation ex- tended by the executive committee on inaugu- ral ceremonies to the fire aepartment of tho District of Columbia, to participate in the peed Incident to the inauguration of General james A. Garfleld as President of the United States on the 4th of March next, which Invita- Uon was referred to the fire board. The fire commissioners say: “It would give us creat pleasure to recommend the acceptance of ths invitation, being strongly disposed to have the members of the fire department unite with their Fike fellow-clit?ens tn doing honor to the ident-elect and trying to make the demon- Stration at his inauguration worthy alike of bim and of the capital city; but there are grave reasons why the firemen, with thelr apparatus, should not be placed in the Mne of the proces sion on that occasion. The indications are that there will be In Washington on the 4ta of March. bext a much greater number of people than on any previous occasion of the kind. it isto be oe ted not only that Pennsylvania avenue will be densely crowded during the passage ot fhe Processton; but that the streets crossing at thoroughfare will be jammed near the in- tersections With people, horses and vehicles, if the tire Sa should be massed in the long procession aud one or more fires shouid occur at points remote from the center of the city, the result would almost certainly be dis- astrous, Either the engines would be so de- layed as to allow a conflagration to Bet danger- ous headway, or there would be peril to itfe and limb in hurrying them through the lines of Spectators, to say nothing of the contusion which such an interruption of the procession would occasion. With the crowd of peopie com- ing bere to honor the tncomfag President, and to see the ipangural ceremonies are a few law- lees en who Come with a very different pur- pose, and would not hesitate to set fire to property if it would afford them a chance to pluud-r, For these reasons the firemen should, in our opinion, be at thetr posis of duty on tue 4.4 of March. They will then be not only ready to respond to alarms of fire, but the engine hoses being widely scattered, the prose men on duty will give more sec of the city Which, if the day isa fae oue, be almost depopulated, and almost ¢ police protection. Itis probable that the taking of testimony for the petitioner in*the case of Minister Cxristlancy agt. Mrs. Christiancy for divorce, before Mr. &, G. Lovejoy will be completed in afew days. It is understood that the ladies examined last week were of but Ittle service to the prosecution, none of them remembering whether Mrs. Christiancy left the house on Christmas day, 1s79—the date of the alleged adultery with Giro at the St. James hotel. ‘The important witness in the case is the col- ored hackman, and it is understood that he has testified to having been oer on the day in question while on the stand and to his taking the person to 311 D street, and after remaining there a short time taking him with a lady to the St. James Hotel. The tmportant quesifon is whether this lady was Mrs, Christiancy, and as yet the hackman has not testitled positively thereto. It is not unlikely that after this testi- mony 18 closed the defendant may rest their cause and endeavor to have the testimony of Giro—who, according to his 01 confession, was a particeps crimluis--stricken Out. If they succeed in this, the case fs at an end on tie Present bill; but should the decision be other- wise, there may be proceedings of a highly Sensational character developed from Mrs. Christiancy’s side of the case. I wish it were possible to picture one of the Scenes of to-day, so that the reader might ap- Preclate and not misunderstand it. Garfield and his family are Disciples and members of a little chureb of that denomination in this town. Very naturally they desired to attend service this morning, and in spite of the rain and wind arranged to do 80. There is a great deal of human nature in the Mentor people, and very naturally Loe too, thought it would be a good idea to attend the Service. Consequently, when General Garfleld’s carriage drove up the general found himself part and parcel of an overcrowded con; on. With a characteristic mixture of Stolidity and modesty he led the way to his fam- ily pew and shortly thereafter the sermon be- ‘an. The sermon was preached by one of Gar- eld’s old pastors, Elder Jones, and Iam pleased to record that the elder, who was rather tame, paid no attention to nis distinguished pupil; but went on about his Master’s business. ‘The cervice closed with the holy communion, of which Garfleld and his wife partook with be- coming reverence, and joining afterward heartily and quite audibly in the hymn beginning, “All hall the power of Jesus’ name.” The entire congregation had little by little come into per- fect harmony with the occasion. Mentor, you know, is small, and all in the church had known and liked Garfield, their neighbor, for maay years. He felt tt and they felt it, and after the Jast chorus of “Crown Him Lord of All” was sung with genuine fervor, and the final prayer began, an atmosphere of sentiment pervated the place and dominated the situation until tae reacher mentioned “our dear Brother Garfield” y hame, and firmly commended him and his family to the guidance and protection of the Oaa whose crown betokened Him “Lord of All.” Then followed a perfect chorus of amens and much weeping and other signs of interest. The benediction was pronounced and an old time hand shaking and good-bye followed. DR. BEARD’S Views on the Treatment of Catarrh. He classes it Among the Most Destructive of Human Ailments, Rapid Progress from a Simple Cold in the Head to Consumption, A Safe, Economical and Perma- nent Cure Sugyested, No single diseare hasentailed more suffering or hastened the breaking up of the constjfation than Catarrh. ‘The sense of smell, of taste, of sight, of hearing, the human voice, the mind,—one or more, and sometimes all yield to its destructive influence. ‘The poison it distributes throughout the system attacks every vital force, and breaks up the most robust of constitutions. Ignored because but little understcod by most physicians, impotently assailed by quacks and charlatans, those suffering from it have little hope to be relieved of it this side of the grave. Itis time, then, that the popular treatment of this terrible discase by remedies within the reach of all pagsed into hands at once competent and trust- worthy. The new and hitherto untried method adopted by Dr. Sanford in the preparation of his Rapicat Cure has won my hearty approval. It is purely vegetable, instantaneous in affording relic? in all head colds, sneezing, snuilling aud obstructed breathing, and rapidly removes the most oppress sive symptoms, clearing the head, sweetening the breath, reetoring tho senses of sincll, taste and hearing, and neutrslizing the constitutional tin- d.ney of thedisesse towards the lunss, liver and kidneys. I believe it likely to succeed whon all tue usual remedies fail, becruse it strikes at the root of the disease, viz: the acilisiet blovd, while it heals the ulcerated membrane by direct application to the nasal passages Its action is based un cer‘ win fixed ruleg, and unless the vital forcea are too far ex- hausted, must, in the creat majority of cases, eifect acure. GEO. BEARD, M.D. Baxrorp’s Rapicar. Cunz meets every phase of Catarrh, from 8 simple head cold to the most loath- seme and destructivestuges. It is local and cozeti- tutional. Iastant in relieving, permanent in car- ing, safe, economical and never failing. SanFouy’s Rapicat Cure consists of one bottle of the Raproat Curg, one box of CaTARRHAL Sor- VENT, and one IMPROVED INRALER, all wrapped in one package, with treatise and cirections, and sold by all druggists for 81. No merely Locan remedy, like douches and insoluble snufis, can poesibly reach or eradicate the virwent sporules of Catarrh. This fact explains the won- derful cures effected by Da. WELDE MEYER'S new INOOULATIVE treatment. The elementa used by him are ABSORBED by the mucous mem - brane throughout the system and form a GONSTI- TUTIONAL as well as local antidote, a3 certain to OURE CATARRG, as vaccine virus is to prevent Small-pox. Its unprecedented sale with uxeolic- ited testimonials from many thousands who, st ALL BTAGES of the disense, HAVE BEEN OURED by this wonderful remedy, establish beyond con- tradiction, the fact that WEI DE MEYER’S UA- TARRH CORE is the most important medica’ discovery since vaccination.
