THE EVENING STAR. -Febrnary 2S, iss LOCAL NEWS. Let the Bu lerkes Off Inau, Day. Editor Star:-—I would like to call the atten- ‘Uon of our merchants and tradesmen to this letter. I am a clerk in one of the numerous stores in the District of Columbia, and have the Same desire fo witness the inaugural ceremo- nies and to view the processions as goverament clerks. Congress has made the 4th of March a holiday here; the clerks, mechanics and ia- borers employed in government work will that day have the privilege to turn out with their clubs or to spend the day in any manner sutta- bie to them, while we poor private clerks will have to remain in our places of bustnass uniess these stores are closed. The majority of the proprietors would gladly close upon that day, while there are others who will have heir stores remain open with their clerks behind the coun- ters, for fear that if they closed they would miss the sale of a spool of cotton or a box of matches, as the case May be. Our employers say, when asked to close their places of business upon the 4th, that if their neighbors will close they will gladly do so, but so long as One remains open they will all do the same. Could we but im- press upon them that we have the same desire to see and the same curtosity to satisty that they or others have would it not have some weight? Would they not be willing to loss the enormous profit made by the sale of said spool ofcotton or box of matches and close their places of business upon that day? Of course restaurants and cigar stores would not be ex- pected to do Unis, as that day will undoubtedly one of the most profitable to them of the yesr; but the retail and wholesale dey goods, grocery and other stores will do very little upon Inauguration day, and why not ailow their clerks to have the same privileges that are al lowed the government clerks, losing their stores after 9 o'clock In the morning? GROCERY CLERK. ————as IBuminate on inauguration Night, Editor Star:—As we are now on the eve of inauguration day, and expect so many stran- gets in our midst, many of whom will remain in our city over night; and of the number who do remain yery many will not go to the in auguration bali, what provision have we Taae to entertain shoe sezangers on te night of inauguration day? v.
