MR, WILLIAMS OPENED FOR TH® DEFRNDANT, Stating that since the oceurrence the prisoner's mouth bad been ciosed. Before stating their defence ne referred to a remark made by Mr. Perry as to the manner the defence had exe cised the right of challenge and sald that tuat Was no attempt to secure a jury from a class, bub that they had chal aged white and col ored, native and naturalized, while the United Statés had not challenged a single eolored man. ‘They bad endeavored to secure intelligent un- biased jurors, and he believed that these were such. He clalmed that the jurors were not to determine whether “people shonid be shot down in the streets,” but whether this d fendant had been guilty of a crime. Evel killing was not murder; 1¢ must be premedi- tated” and with malice. ‘Tnus far there bern two statements mads—oae ty Hackman and Pearce, and the other by Kilis, Waters and others, They expected to show that the story of Hackman and Pearce is the true one, and if they succeeded they would claim a verdict for detendant. Norris testified that, he was nearly 2 years of age; has resided at 8th and $ streets for two months; was engaged with his brother In the coal business on i4th, near T street northwest; had been acquaimted with defend- ant for some time; was with him on March 29th, between 7 and 9 o’elock, on 14th street; Hack: man and Pearce were i thelr company. They went down 4th street, Hackman and Pearce having thelr arms locked with Jobnson in front, aud witness astep behind. CGRONER'S INQUEST TS-DA A caroner’s inquest was held at 12 o'clock te-day at the elgbth precinct station-houae on the body of Susan Annle Carter, the colored woman who died carly yesterday morning, at the sims house hospital, irom the effects of the | cruel beating received on the Oxen Lill road. THE TESTIMONY. The first witness was Detective Coomes, who testified that he arrested Shaw for the larce of some Clothes from his brother-in-law, G | He arrested bim on the isth tnss,, ou D, between 9th and 10th streets, the boy giving lis nome as Basil Tillman. After bis arrest, Carter reported that his room had been robbed of a suitof clothes. Witness showed him tbe cicthes which he had recovered, aud Carter identified them, as also the boy, who he sald Was bis brother-in-law, aud that the last he had seen of him was the Sunday nigat previ- ous, when he and Mrs. Carter had lett the Louse together to go to their mother, near Oxen Bill, in the county. At this time it had not been discovered that the victim of this as- fault was the wife of Carter, Hie did not know it for two days atterwards. ‘The next witness was George Carter, husband of deceased, who testified thag he lives at 455 Louisiana avenue, opposite the City Hall, Oa the 16th of January, at 10 o’clock p.m.. Shaw came to bis house and stated that Mrs. Carter’s mother was very Mj, and he had come to go down In the country to see her, Carter Invited him Jn to wait for Mrs. Carter, who had been invited out to dinner. Waen she returned home she immediately prepared to start with George. They left the house just vefore nine o’ciock, witness golbg with them to the street cars. She took a basket of provisions aiong, and some prepared toddy for ber mother. Wit- hess saw them beth on the street car about 9 o'clock, and tis was tue last time he saw bis wife until he saw her at the hospital. She satd on parting that she would be back tn a few days, and not to be worried about her. This ts all he knew, except that on Tuesday he was robbed. Charley lived in Maryland, bat had hot been seen at his mother’s for two weeks. No message had ever been sent to his wife as he has since learned. Hs wife had about $2.50 in money to his knowledge. She niver reached her destination. Charles Smith, a young white man, testified that he saw Charley Shaw Sunday night, the 16th tnst.. pass his blacksmith shop between 10 and 11 o’¢lock at night, eomlag towards Union- was With bim.
