The Evening Star has a regular, perma- y other dally paper pub- lished In Washinaton, and equal to that of all the other dally papers here added te- gether. a Se _————————— Tax Stax office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. ivertisements, orders for the paper Dy mail and otherwise, news, or any information oF ‘business can be sent day or night, free of charre. | The Donbie Sheet To-morrow. } Tae Stak will be issued to-morrow tn eight page form of fifty-six columns. The Circulation of the single issue was never so large as now, but the double one of Saturday commands an extra edition of several thousand. Advertisers and newsdealers will please send im their orders as early as practicable. The number of new advertisements printed thus | far in January is 1,419. ——— ‘The Land Monopolists of Ircland. Keeent publications showing the numberZot acres of land held in each county of Ireland by the wealthy land monopolists present an argu- | ment in support of the land agitation that Is unanswerable. Ireland contains 20,; | acres, ot which 5,709,161 acres are owned by :21 per- sons, an average Of 30.654 acres to each. The remainder, 16.613.459 Is divided among 5,411,416 | owners, OF an average of about three acres each. The upwardsof four milion acres owned by the 121 persons comprises the most fertile and valuable fand of the island, while a large proportion of that divided among the small holders ts 80 poor as to be worth scarely any- thing. in county Donegal Lord Conyngham's estate comprises 300 acres; that of Lord Lettrinn 54,552 acres, and that of H. Stewart 5v,318 acres. These extensive estates are, as a rule, owned by the titled aristocrats who have never felt any Interest in Ireland beyond the taeome they could derive from their lands, | County Mayo ts owned entirely by 603 per- | sons, the estates ranging in size from 114,331 acres (that of Lord Sligo) down to 15,000 acres, County Wieklow 1s In possession of 50: owners. while 1,46 persons own county Limerick. Lange estates are held. In about the same pro- | Portion, in all the other counties of Ireland, a Tew of them owned by companies, but the large majority by titled aristocrats, many of whom would not delgn to reside in ireland, In the light of these Ugures, the readiness with which the people of Ireland have joined any movement promising reliet trom land oppression Is easily understood. We have had in this country an example of the benefits that flow from the ac- quirement of the ownership of land by those | who cultivate it. When the rebellion ended the | plantations in the southern states were stlll held by the comparatively few who had owned them under the slave system. It only required a few years of experience to demonstrate that the old system could not be maintained with profit. from year to year, since about 1570, the division of large plantations into small farms has increased, and in the ratio that these small farms passed into the Possession of these who actually culti- Vated the land, both white and black, so has the prosperity of that section increased. ‘The present land system of Ireland was devised | good of the many, when the {dea prevatled that | the possessor of a Ultle and bis descendants were superior belogs for whose comfort and luxury the comman people ought to deem it a Privilege to suffer. This absard {dea has ex- Ploded with the advance of civilization, and the enlightened princtpie of the equality of man has invaded Great Britain. Walle the vast Majority of the people of Ireland are prevented by law from enjoytug the opportunity of reap- ing the benefits of their own labor and debarred from the high privilege of atquiring any sab- Stantial Interest in the land. the population will remain restless, dissatisfied and ripe for agitation. The fraternity of burglars who are plying | their trade with so much activity and success im Washington at the present time would do Well to carefully study the Congressional Di rectory, 80 as to avoid falling fnto the fatal blunder of robbing a member of either House of Congress or any of the Judges having to do with our criminal courts.
