The Pennsylvania republican fight for a United States Senator to take Wm. A; Wallace's Place will have to be settled by republicans ta the legisiature. Yesterday afternoon a meeting of Grow men was held, which was attended by 4S of his followers. At the meeting a paper was presented: “That, tn the existing condition of things, It 18 not for the best interest of the republican party or the welfare of the state Uthat We should go into a caucus on the election of a candidate for United States Senator, decline going into any preliminary caucus, and intend to give expression to our individual preferences in the senate and house or tn joint convention of the senate aud house.” The paper was signed by forty-four of those present and afterwards received additional signatures, which Tan it up to fifty. The action of the Grow men caused Considerable confusion in the Oliver ranks. They, however, went into caucus at the appointed time. Ninety-eight delegates were present. Mr. Law, of Philadelphia, atter stating the Grow situation, submitted a’ motion that Unless @ candidate received a sufficient number of republican votes to elect him, delegates should be free to vote for whom they chose. His Motion was voted down, when Messrs. Ruddi- man, of Philadelphia, and Smiley, of Perry, with drew. ‘This left fifty-six repubiicans out of i The caucus, however, placed the owing men In nomivatton and balloted for . Mr. Grow states that the sign- ing of the paper to stay out of the caucus does not com le men to vote for him, but he thinks they willdo so. In the present’ condi- Uon of things it 1s hard to tell who will be the choice of the legislature. The democrats last night were talking Grow, and it looks as it some coalition would be formed with anti- caucus republicans unless a compromise 15 made In that party. The legislature stands 153 republicans, 93 democrats, 2 greenbackers, 1 greenback repubitcan and 1 fusionist. THOMAS C. George Eliovs Funeral. Mr. Edward King, in a letter to the Boston Journal, thus describes the persons in attena- ance at Geurge Ellot’s funeral: “Now began to arrive maay women, harsh of feature, severe of dress and honest manners. ‘They plodded through the mud, and trod with philosophic indifference over the flat tomb- stones. There was a Comtean energy in their movements. By and by came men with long halr and straggling beards. Comtists all, or mostly, I suspect, editors of quarterlies, month- lies and Weeklles’ and next arrived a sedate arust, who made a drawing of the forbidding locality and of the many umbrellas grouped to- gether. Ladies in gray nair and very youcatal hats came and sat down on the edges of the fombs. Young men with white faces and big brows came. Tacn I saw a delegation of bright tooking Jews, with twinkling eyes and agire: sive steps, and 1 thougut of “Daniel Derouda. But I should say, although I do not profess 19 know, that the philosopnic element predoml- hated among the mourners. There were many ‘terary men and women tn the processtoa, but inere “were more disciples of the religion of aumanity. The people who were wout to fre- gut nt George Ellot’s Sunday eveutng receptious were Dearty all present, and they stood pa ently in the rain tor an hour waiting the arrival ef the funeral car with Its pestous freight. A few persons brought wreaths aud placed them on the muddy boards beside tne stave. THE Proposition To Divipg Texas into four States. S0 as to increase southern influence in the Senate, is broached anew by the Rerter of Austin, Texas, which thinks that the state legislature will act upon the matter soa. Ac- cording to the Reviev, the division can be made by the consent of ‘Texas, the consent of the United States having been explicitly given in advance by the terms’ of the resolution of an- nexation, in which it is stipulated that “such States shall be entitled to admission under the federal constitution.” The only conditions re- quired are that the states shall be of conventent sive and have suffictent population. MAKING Hicnways OF Ick.—To one not familiar with the 3] cle, 1t looks quite novel to see a long white roadof ice winding its length through the woods, through slashiogs, over and around hills and acros3 plains, on elther side of which there 1s not a particle of snow to whiten the earth. Manysuch roads have been formed tn the woods the present winter, and over them great loads have been hauled by single teams. These roads are re- newed daily, the sprfnkling cart being put on at night, after the day’s hauling has been a2 complished.—Bay City Press, GENERAL GRANT was yesterday elected pres!- | dent of the World's Fair Commission, under Whose auspices the great fair ts to be held in New York in 1883. Baer, widely known in political circles as the “Buckeye Blacksmith,” was found dead ta achair Wednesday at his residence, in Phtla- Geiphia. He made his appearance in the Har- rison campaign of 139 as astump speaker, and attracted much atteption by his ready wit and backwoods manhéer of speaking. He appeafed in every campaign during the existence of the hig party, an old WI id afterwards as a champion of Fremont, Lincola and Grant. His sentiments were of the most radical character, and in his public speeches he lashed Sis Oppoments with- out mercy, He was born in the-year 1500, ia Ohio, and made his first political speeches tn the Henry Clay campaign in that state, He was appointed President Lincoln to a position in thé Baltimore custom house, and was by Presi- dent Grant transferred to the custom house in Philadelphia. —_______ THE Last Puace in which “things are not what they seem” fs disclosed by the Boston Commercial Bulletin to be in the size of shoes. self obliged to move up one stair.
