THE EVENING STAR._| WASHINGTON, FRIDAY January 14, 1881. CROSBY 8. NOYES. Editor. The Evecing Star bas a regular, perma- bona fide dally circulation more than t of any other dally paper pub- linhed in Washington, and equal to that of all the ether daily papers here added te- aeth ——————$—$ Tue S722 office is connected with the Telephone xchange. Advertisers and newsdealers will pyease send In their orders as early a3 practicable, ‘The cemposttion of the new Tammany gene- ral committee does not indicate that John Kelly bas lost any of his influence over bis followers tm New York city. On the contrary. his friends seem to stick to him closer than ever since he bas been deprived of office, It 1s admitted by some of the anul-Tammany Icaders that the ew Tammany organization 1s much stronger than the old. At any rate, it is evident that Mr. Kelly retains as much political power as when be held the controllership, and he has the advantage of a compact and faithful or- ganization to back him. The democratic oppo- nents of Tammany have undermined and de- stroyed Irving hall without, thus far, building another Organization upon Its ruins. Ina local election, as between the republicans and the anut-Tammany democrats, Tammany will hold the balance of power very decidediy, and Mr. Kelly will no doubt use tt to the discomfiture of nis enermics. Of the prominent Tammany men, such as S. o Wood, not one has yet deserted Kelly; but, on the other hand, they, like the less known mem- bers of the organization, stand firmly by their colors. It 1s plain enough thai. tue New York democray cannot organize a party that has any chance to control the cliy or state while It ignores Tammany. From a recent “official” statement in regard to the organization and history of the Irish Land League, it appears that some $4,000 of money from America helped the agtfation along in its earlier stages. The discorf#ent engendered throughout Ireland by the bad season and short harvest of 1578 among a class living direct upon the sofl, and, in very many instances, but Mttle removed from the status of squatter sowed the seeds of the movement against the Payment of rent. It was soon perceived by the Irish leaders Ubat the thme was favorable forthe establishment of a platform of coercion, by Which the landlords would be forced to grant abatements and the government compelled to push forward some exceptional measure of re- Hef which would save the peasantry from star- vation for the winter. On Aprit 20, 1579, Michacy Davitt harangned the peasantry of county Mayo. This was the commencement of an agi- tation which has been systematized and ex. vended by the Land League with incredible ditl- gence, and at a large expenditure of money, until It can,.at the presentmoment, boast that It covers every district of the country with a net- Work of branch organizations, all pledged to obey the mandates of the central body. ae In bis inaugural message, Governor Critren- den, of Missouri, took most decided ground in favor of the enactment of I!beral laws and their fearless enforcement agatnst ali violators, and he promised that, as the executtve of the state, he should insist upon the puntsument of aly law-breakers, without “fear, favor or affec- tion.” Tne governor has reference, more partic- ularly, no doubt, to the yangs of desperadoes who have frequently robbed ratiroad trains and sometimes banks, in western states. It Is commonly known that these gangs, or rather the one that ts belleved to be the most desper- ate and active of them all—that headed by th notorious James brothers—iind shelter and pro- tection Im Missourf. In one section of the state the man who has an ambition for political pret- erence understands that he must not advocate the enforcement of the laws agalast the James brothers, if he would not destroy his prospect Of success. These notorious brothers have nu- merous friends and relatives, whose influence is invariably exerted In thetr belalf. The news papers have even spoken tn defence of these desperadoes. It is to be hoped that Governor Crittenden will have the courage to carry out his promise that “no political #fl}llations” or ine fluences sball protect any vioiators of the law under bis Seeeiaee. The machine wing “or the Tepublican party in New York has scored another victory in the caucus nomination of Mr. Piatt for U.S. Sena- | tor. As the anti-machine repubiteans part! pated In the caucus they probably submit to she will of the majority and acqniesce in the result. No doubt there will be some complain- ings on the part of the most extreme anti- Conkling republicans, but thase Protests will be too feeble to have any effect. In Pennsyl- Vanla the machine element captured the repub- lean caucus and nominated its candidate for Senator, but there ts a revolt which may give | ~ the managers trouble. A number of repubitcan members of the legislature, sufictent to hold | the balance of power and prevent the election of an objectionable candidate, pledgea them. | Selves to stand together in opposition to the | caucus Lominee. They protest against the rule | Of the bosses and the means employed by the | latter to control the Caucus. It 13 quite Ukely, however, that the bosses wi!l persuade enough | 4 of the recalcitrant members “tor the good of the party” to come over to the support of the | nominee and elect him. ee Near the close of every session of Congress au announcement Is made in the press to the effect that the extsting line of Amer.can Steamers be tween New York and Brazii 1s about to be dis ‘continued. This announcement invariably | Peevedes au effort to push through Congress a Subsidy schemé tn bebalf of a line of steam- | ships to Brazil. The heroic efforts of the one | line to matatain itself are painted in glowing H lapguage, and Congress is warned, by the par- | Ues Interested In the subsidy, that unless some. | | | } thing ts done British gold will triumph over American enterprise. The regular announce. ment Of the falling efforts or the existing line ig out, and the attempt to crowd the subsidy through Congress may be expected at an early day. ————_++ ‘The city council of Danville, Va., adopted the | ‘usual resolutions of respect and coudolence | upon the death of a brother member who was a | colored man, and, in accordance with the cus- | tom, attended the funeral in a body. In short, | the dead colored councilman was treated pre- cisely as if he had been white. —_—_—_—<ce-____ Publte confidence in the integrity of Mr. Glad- Stoue’s purpose to do the best withia hts power for Ireland appears to be manifesting Itself sub- ‘Stantlally in Great Britain. The cable an- ounces that “fifteen other Irisa members have seceded from Mr. Parnell’s party and more are expected to follow.” It is declared that the government bill to be introduced in Parlla- ment contains all the practical provisions of relief that the Irish people demand. ——_+<+e Kentucky begins to loom up as a rival of Onlo tn furnishing ‘sons’ to Ml the oMces.
