The Telegraph-pole Nuisance. it Will be seen by the em in amother part of tue paper that a new telegraph company bas applied to the District Commissioners for per- | 4 mission to erect a line of telegraph pole; and | wires through various streets tm the clty,—Tth Street, Mount Vernon Square, 9ih street, I street, New York avenue, and soon. Is {ft not about time that a stop should bs put to this disfigurement of the city and injury to private property, involved in giving permission to the thousand-and-one telegraphic companies, new and oid, to set up poles and string wires at their sweet will along the streets? Tue plan of the city, In baving beautiful vista views along streets and avenues radiating from various pointa, has already been sadly marred by lines of huge unsighily, crooked telegraph ‘poles’ (really unshapely tranks of trees) Dearing im mense webs of wires. The charming shade treeffeature of Washington ts also mangled aad disfigured by these poles and wires; which bave the right of way over every other consid- eration. But beyond ail cise the rights of ci'{- zens—property Owners and business men—are invaded by these telegraph companies. They cut down & man’s shade trees and plant poles as big as ship’s masts directly In front of his premises, to the Injury of his property or his busineas, not only without his consent, but against bis protest The Commissioners, mm thetr late report, express themselves fa favor Of legisiation requiring the telegraph com- panies here to lay their wires under ground, and Lieut. Greene shows conclustvely by the light of expertence in European cities that this mode can and ought to be adopted here. Wonld it not be well, therefore, for the District gov- ernment to decline permission for the erection ‘of any more telegraph poles, and ask legtslation requiring all telegraph wires in Washington to we lata under ground?
