A meeting of the decoration committee was | held last evening at the National Metropolitan Bank—Lieut. F. V. Greene in the chair, and Mr. J. J. Alibright secretary. The report of the sub-committee on general plan was made by Lieut. Greene, who explained it In detail, It comprises: ‘A series of thirty-elzht lgnt arches, made of gas-pipes, thrown over each intersecting street on the north and south of Pennsylvania avenue, from the Capitol to Sixteen-and-a-ha'f street, each arch to be deco- rated appropriately for one state in the Union. A large arch of wood thrown over Fifteenth street, opposite the south front of the Treasury department, appropriately decorated to repre- sent the whole Union of states. The decora- tion of Penna. ave. to consist of garlands, Wreaths, flags, lanterns, &c., suspended from fron posts onthe iine of the curb on each side, making @ continuous line of decora\ the President's House to be decorated wii arches of wire, suspenaed from the trees and spanuing the roadway at adistance of about thirty feet, the whole connected together so as to form an arched canopy of wires, from which Japanese lanterns, &c., will be suspended. Kenny, in Septem ber, 1579, made a deed to Aitken, Son & Co., of his stock, but remained in possesston. ‘The court declared th» deed of trust from Kenny Yold, as reserving to the grantor the possession and use of the chattels conveyed. The court also held that a person could not himself make any exemption intended by the statute,and that the marshal, only, could do this where he made alevy and sale. One carriage, with two horses, harness, « has to pay every year under the present la $s. or atthe rate of $2.45 on every hundred dotlars investment, while the merchants ey but $1.50 personal tax on every one hundred dollars and no license, and at the same time they may handle their stocks in trade over a hundred times each year. The subject of or- ganizing a permanent association for mutual protection was discussed, and a motion was adopted to meet next Monday night for that purpose. Cranford et al,, indicted for | Dulsance—the asphalt works at 11th and B | streett—Mr, W. A. Cook to-day filed a plea in ‘abatement. This plea ts: 1st. That J. A. Gray, Edwerd Crusor and Philitp Alston, having been legally summoned to the Jury as tales men, were excluded (on the grouud that they | had served on juries within a year) and three | others were called to fill tneir piaces, and there- fore the grand jury is Illegal; 2d. That Gray, Crusor and Alston were excused, not on any Tequest on their part, but were set aside and removed, and the grand jury is incompetent and incapable of finding a valid indictment; that the attorney of the District, when certain persons were excused from the grand jnry, approached one of the deputy marshals an: endeavored to influence him to select business men, &c., by reason of which tofluence certain persons were selected, &c. Viiiness told him that his wagon was on the track and he could not drive right off, but if he would step aside he would drive off. Mur- phy then drew a pistol and jumped into the Wagon, and sald that he was a policeman and ordered the boy to follow him to the station- house, Officer Cooper came along at this stage of the proceedings, and knowing Murphy’s char- acter, he took him into custody. WHRELER From ALLEGED ABORTION.—This morning in the Crim- inal Court, Judge James, the case of Ambrose Folifot, who was arrested in April last on the charge of mansiaughter in causing the death of a Miss Suste M. Wheeler, on MavCh 22d last— the result of {an attempt at abortlon—was called. Mr. L. G. Hine, for the accused, stat +d that he wos ready for trial. Mr. Perry, for the government, said that the principal witness for the government had left the jurisdiction of the court, and they knew, not his present where- abouts.
