THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, TUESDAY. December a, 1850. | ‘CROSBY S. NOYES...... Editor. The Evening Star has a regular, perma- nent, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any othe! ‘ily paper pub- lished in Washington, and equal to that of all the other dally papers here added to- aether. ————————— ‘THE Stan office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or Dbuatness can bs sent day or nicht, free of charge. A Double-Sheet To-morrow. Owing to the pressure of holiday advertise- ments, and In order to give the readers of THE Star thelr proper quota of reading matter, an | eight-page paper of 56 columns will be Issued | to-morrow. Advertisers will please send in thetr orders as early as practicable. We trust that the petition presented to Con- «ress yesterday, praying for an act to remit | ali taxes on property In this city used as par- sonages since the year 1STv, and to exempt ali such from taxation In future, will be filed away tn the crypt of the Capitol, and never be heard of again. If the people consiltuting a church congregation see fit to build a house for the use of their pastor, there is no good reason why they should not pay taxes on it the same as they do on their individual property. Should those congregations or the preachers of those congregations wealthy enough to bulld parson- ages of their own have any advantage over those who are too poor to «oso, and have to rent theirs? Certainly there should be no such discrimination against poor congregatioas, who would have to pay taxes In increased rent. Or, on the other hand, should the house owaer who rents his property toa pastor hold it exempt from taxation, and his neighbor who rents his toa layman pay taxes upon his, because of the differeace in the profession of their tenants? Hardly anybody, we suppose, would answer | either of these questions tm the allirmative; yet such resuit would be the practical effect of the legislation prayed for. -20-- z Mr. Thompson. who bade farewell to the em- | ployés of the Navy department on Saturday, will doubtless have an opportunity to go through with the same affecting ceremony toward those under him in the service of the Isthmus Cana} Company before he hasbeen in bis new place half as long as he occupied his (ld position. Nobody supposes for a moment, we take It, that Mr. Thompson was called to the presidency of the American branch of the company because of any special fitness for the piace, or for any other reason than that it was thought the elevation to that position of a per- Son officially connected with the administration would promote the financial prospects of the concern In Europe, and that he happened to be | the only material in the cabinet available for that purpese. Wher this end 1s accomplished, or when it shall be seen that the plan will not werk, Mr. Thompson will be suddeniy dropped, as not able toearn his $25,000 per eught to have madea contract for t Mr. Jewett didon assumtag the pre: | the Erfe road, and got his pay for the whole term In advan: a The advantage to places of a | usement in | selling reserved seats without extra cost to the purebaser of tickets was forcibly fllustrated in | the case of the lecture of Mr. Archibald Forbes | last evening. Those who went to procure seats | at noon yesterday found pretty much all the | good places already taken,—the certainty of | getting a choice seat without additional charge having tempted many persons to buy their tickets In advance. Yet when the hour for the | lecture came, owing to the inclement weather, | a large number of the seats so taken were vacant, and rematned so the whole evening, the | buyers manifestly choosing to lose thelr Invest- ment rather than turn out on such a night. The result was that the lecture fund was the gainer by a considerable amount, which it would not have received had {t not held out to the public the inducement which tt did. The purchase of reserved seats in advance {s, in fact, in the nature of an insurance against loss to piaces of amusement; and, instead of having | | to pay more for them, those who buy In advance | Ought really to be supplied cheaper than those Who retain for their own benefit all chances of bad weather and other unforseen causes which may prevent their attendance when the hour GREAT MARK DOWN, AND SPECIAL BARGAINS Is HOLIDAY NOVELTIES, aT THE THE BOSTON HOUSE, 921 Pennsyivania Avenuc.
