The last tssue of the Christian Standar@, the organ of the Church of Disciples, published at Ctneinnatl, Ohio, has a good deal to say about building a new house of meeting for the de- noraination in this city. It says: “It will be seen from a statement made in these columns that the board of the general missionary con vention, — in harmony with the offictal board of the church at Washington, has under- | taken the work of raising money for a new house of rorship at Washiogton, D.C., and bas appointed Joseph Smith, jr., of this city,as treas- urer of the fund, and Taomas W. It is expected that a bullding committee will be appointed by the missionary board to act in conjunction with a committee appointed by the ebureh in Washington, and nothing will be at- tempted aie what the means secured will warrant. Boston is agitated on the question of the mayoraity. Mayor Prince is already renominated by the democrats, and the opposition seem somewhat at sea as to their views as to who should be entered 31 thim. Alderman Slade, an ex- cellent man, who I believe voted for Hancock, has been nominated by a committee of ciuzens, and may be nominated ny the regular repud- licans, it {8 thought would make a good race against Prince; but the latter is solid. Tiere are some charges against him. The magt em- phatic seems to be his disposition to take views with regard to the Morey letter in accordance with those of Barnum during the late campaign, While republicans, many of whom have, to :ay the lesst, not actively fought him, think he didn’t show a proper respect. for General Grant when the distinguished citizen was dined by the Middlesex Club recently. If Slad2 recetves th+ republican nomination, there muty be a ch inge in the mayor's office; but the Price meu don’t seem to be alarmed at the situation. Ex.Governor Boutwell’s paper in the Nor‘) American Revie has, without doubt, caused an intense interest in ‘this section. ‘The well- known “progressive” views of that d.stinguished gentleman are shown not to have suffered tn ‘the lapse of years; but there are very many cit- izens of this commonwealth who, tn their ap- proval of the principles of the “party in pow- er,” stand just upon as high a plane as Mr. Boutwell, yet they feel convinced that the adop- tion of his latest expression would be a serious departure from a proper policy. That his theory is Lo be the subject of serious discussion by lead- ing men who have power and influence in na- tonal councils 18 not to be doubted. Such was undeniably the intention when the lines were penned by the author. Governor Boutweil 1s not a writer for amusement; his public utter- ances, by word or pen, are made with a pur- pose—the purpose of educating those who con- sider them to the standard of national policy he endorses, His high reputation 1g thls state, and his acknowledged influence in national af fairs, Co not leave room to doubt that his inag- azine article will rest with tts first issue. The preponderance of opinion has been that Mr. Dawes will succeed himself. Up tothe present time nothing definite can be known. The friends of Gov. Long think he would lend a brilliancy to the office that ts not known in the present senatorial deleza- Uon from this state; but 1t has been announced that he is not an aspirant at present. He can wait, and his career, they assert, will not be diminished in the interval. Few names have come to the front in the discussions that have been held on the topic. The young republican element are not averse to more dash, if the word May be used, in the state’s representatives in the Senate, and some of them have not hesi- tated to express the opinion that the high standard Mr. Dawes had in the House as a leading statesman does not follow him into the Senate.
