THE EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. WASHINGTON. SATURDA November 27, 1880, € ROSBY s S. NOYES....Editor. She Evening Star has @ regular, perma- ment. bona fide datly circulation more | than double that of any other daily paver published in Washington, and equal tothe of ail the other daily papers here added te- gether. Tux Stax office is connected with the Telephone or business can be sent day or night, free of ebsrve ‘There is danger that the business of opposing | the proposed performance of the Passioa Play in New York may be carried too far. Save the manager, probably nobody tn the United States is actively In favor of his sacreligious innova- top, Ali tuat was necessary in the premises therefore was for the press and pulpit to give voice tothe general sentiment of disapproba- ton and let the venture be a losing one and come quickly to its end for want of support, as it would undoubtediy have done. When, how- ever, It {s proclalmed that the performance shal! not be given, whether anybody wants to see tt or not, the matter assamesa different aspect. Anything that can be construed as an arbitrary act will soon provoke opposition, and a cause bad enough tn itself will often flad defenders tor the sake of a principle which may be involved in suppressing ft. Besides, the prominence given tothe affair will Induce many persons to go and see the exhibition who otherwise would never have thought of witnessing it. The play is one that has no business on the stage, under apy circumstances, and public seatiment tf left To itself would speedily and effectually con- demn it by keeping away from its performance. To ring up the curtain to stiliness and empty space {s the most crushing rebuke that can be administered to a manager, and this ts what il happen to the management in the present fustance ff he is left severely alone. In other words, this Is a case where stlence and contempt wit be found a far more effective agent than xol:y and persistent opposition. a eee It will be stoutly resisted by the country Papers, of course, but the time 1s near at hand when the national, congressional and state taliots to be cast in the several states wil! all he printed at one central establishment ta each § . under the scrutiny of a careful sub com- mittee, and distributed from there to the difter- ent county committees and through them to Ube voting precincts. Tie errors so frequently made In the printing of tickets and the party risks abd complications arising therefrom are £0 numerous and great that the managers of the campaign on both sides will not much longer be willing to rua the chances of having a whole summer's work thrown away through the stupidity or carelessness of a country printer ! who claims the printing of tickets ete. a3 his perquisite, or a8 a sort of political reward, and Bot because he ts in any way qualified to do the work, Many of the troubles in Matne last year came from this source, and the loss of a repud- ican presidential e:ector in Indiana this year ts another case in point. In the first instance the defect was in spelling the names of candidates, | «(which occurred frequently again this year in regard to Mr. Plalsted, the candidate for gover- nor,) and in the latter the name of one candt- date for elector was omitted entirely trom the Aickets voted in three or four counties. Another case of attempt at murder by a | burglar occurred this week,—this time in New York. The intended victim tn the instance | under notice was not an inmate of the entered bouse, but a policeman who undertook to arrest shots were fired at the officer neither of them took effect. All the same, however, the attempt to kill demonstrated the fact that the burglar Was both prepared and determined to commit | murder, if necessary, in order to either carry Out his purpose or secure his escape trom arrest. In spite of his resistance he was taken inte cus- tody, but the probability is that he will get off entirely or escape with light sentence, and soon be turned loose again to renew his murderous career. If the laws of the several states made burglary a capital offence, as they should make it, that crime would be far less common than it bow is, and community would have mich bdelter protection than it now has, and which it is justly entitled to, ‘The Montenegrins are occupying Datetgno under the protection of the allied fleet, and they Will continue to hold it just so long as that pro- | tection lasts, and In all probability no longer. The powers cannot afford to keep thelr tron Clads in front of Dulcigno for the sake of sus- taining the Montenegrins, and whenever the fleet withdraws the Albantans will, no doubt. Strike to recapture the town. The Albanian league {s formidable, and can soon overcome Montenegro, if tne Porte will not interfere; and | it will ne@do So unless forced 10. ore ___ ‘The southern states are growing rieh, The cotton crop of this year will put miltions of dollars Into the pockets of the people of that | Section, not to count the value of the sugar and rice crops, This prosperity has encouraged the people of those states to invest in manufacto ries. Cotton and woolen factories are now ‘being erected in nearly allot them. Georgia ts Investing largely in such interests, and already the bum of the running spindles in some of the towns, it 1s sald, sounds ike a New moet town. - The annual report of the District Commis. Sioners, Which we print in full to-day, contatos matter of interest to every citizen of the federal capital. Besides the review of the operations of the District goverament for the past year, there are various Important recom. mendations and suggestions for Its future con- duct. With the mercury nestling d down in the bilb of the thermometer so early in the season, as it bas been up in Maine for several days past, Uhere ts no need of, and there can be no excuse for, an Ice famine next summer.
