THE EVENING STAR. - WASHINGTON ‘WEDNESDAY... ..November 3, 1880. CROSBY S. NOYES....Editor. ee Zhe Evening Star hasa@ regular, germa- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily payer published in Washington, and equal tothe of all the other daily payers here added to- ether. —————————————— ‘Tux Bran office ts connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail an otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. ess ‘The ‘oral of tt. Among the causes for the sweeping republi- can victory yesterday, two were prominent. ‘The first, undoubtedly, was the dread of bus!- ness men that a Change would affect their inter ests Ipjuriously. There was general prosperity thrcughout the country, and they preferred to Jet weil enough alone. In this connection the Teputable management of public affairs by the Present administration no doubt afforded @ powerful argument against a change, It ts a rather remarkable fact that in all the in- tensity of this canvass, in which public and pri- Vate character has been ransacked for materia) Of defamation, no point has been made against the present administration tn any of its depart- ments. Especially there was a general feel- ing in bu ess circles that the filuancia! man- agement of the nation was lu safe hands. With the manufacturers, again, there was a decided Indi-postitn to bave a change that would call for a tariff “for revenue only.” That plank in the democratic piatform no doubt lost that party thousands of votes in states they could Riot afford to lose. The extent of this business Teelirng exulisted for the republican ticket is shown by the remarkable vote ta New York city, Where the usual enormous democratic Presidential majority was whittled down to about 30,000. Of course the local dissensions amongst the democracy there helped to de- moraiize them, both upon the national and city tlcket, but the great cause of their loss was undoubtedly the defection of business democrats. The next Most powerful cause for the result yesterday ‘Was the uneasiness and jealousy created In the northern mind by the “solid south.” In the early part of the campaign it did not seem that this consideration would have very great Weight with the northern voters, but as It pro- gressed, and as the stalwart leaders came to the front in the canvass, [t was soon evident that their impassioned appeals, with the “solid South” as a text, was working to fire the north- ern heart. The democrats could have had no Detter candidate than Gen. Hancock. His in tegrity, pairlotism, and maniiaess of character Combined to make him the strongest candidate they could have named, and in the various blunders of their campaign his nomination must Dot be reckoned as one. nhappy Ireland. The agitation tn Ireland has reached a stage that must culminate in very serious conse- quences unless the greatest wisdom shall be exercised in dealing with the questions about ‘Which the people are so excited. Tae present Tulers of Great Britain seem to realize this fact, and, indeed, exhibit some inclination to avoid Precipitating a crisis, if possible. The temper Of the Irish people is now aroused to such a Piten that very littie in tbe nature of oppres- sion or wrong would tnflam2 them to violence; and while the government could and would eventually subdue them, the effect of an up- Fising world be damaging to Brit!sh interests and British bonds, not to count the loss of life. Should the government arrest Parnell and his ©0-agitators, how to dispose of them would pre- Bent a question net easily solved. if tried in Ireland the juries would acquit then, and it tried before English juries, the conviction would be determined beforehand. The latter coarse would give rise to the ery of persecution, ud arouse the sympathies of other peoples in behalf of the Irish. It may be that ‘the government will find it the part of wisdom and prudence to make some conc2sstoa3 to the Irish peopie, that will relleve their condition And remove the causes of complatnt that now exist. The continued and ¢: sive poverty of the Irish masses shows that they are not given a fair chance to better their condition. The Jand system and laws operate against thom, @nd legislation that would relieve then ant @ncourage them to habits of industry and economy, that they might acquire titles to homesteads, would, in the end, prove bone ficial t» the government. It 1s prodable that the government might have taken soma steps in the direction of a reform of the evils com plained of, had it not been for the position and Gemards of the leaders of the agitation. Their Course bas been such that the government could not make any concessions without seem- Ing to do so under compulsion or from fear ‘The government, of course, could rot be put in the attitude of yielding to an uprising of this character, as that would tmpatr lts power over its own subjects ta the future. The liberal party has manifested a disposition to treat Treiand, at least, with a degre? of consideration never shown by the tortes, and a little diplo- macy and conservatism on the part of the agitators might accomplish more for their cause than threats. oe Everybody’s Jubilee. At the close of a hotly contested political campaign, when one side ts greatly elatedov: the result, it follows that the other should be depressed in a corresponding degree. There are, however, two features connected with the History of yesterday's contlict over which every- bedy can, and ought to be, thankful. The first is the fact that, notwithstanding the heat of party feeling in many parts of the country, the day's proceedings were not, so far as has yet been reported, disgraced by any scenes of ex- treme violence or bloodshed. The second is the fact that the successful candidate tor the Prest- dency has received so large a majority in the electoral college ag not to leave the result in aby sort of doubt, and to spare the country such a trying strain as 1t was subjected to four Years ago. These are broad and common Grounds for congratulation, upon which all good citizens can meet and mingle their rejotc- ings. —_-o-___ The special telegraphic service of Tae Starin the October and November elections 1s without Precedent in the history of evening journalism, and illustrates most foretbly that an evening Paper with the proper enterprise and the tn- creased telegraphic facilities of the past year or two, can print all of the news of the day on Which 1t !s issued. In October our special dis- patches womistakably Indicated on the day of the election the result in Indlana and Obie. In Indiana, which was really the pivotal state of ‘the general contest, the result was fully antict- Pated then and again confirmed in the same ume on yesterday. The contents of ninety-one dispatches, making six columns, from twenty- tive states were printed in the two editions of ‘THE Stak last evening, showing conclusively that the republican presidential ticket had been elected; but at the same time giving the claims « Of the democratic leaders and papers, thus pre- Senting 9 complete picture of the situation atter the close of the polls. It is hardly necessary to add that most extraordinary editions of the Paper were printed and sold. Safe sound draft Foie anges and HALN#38. sin sly oF tovether. Drovers’ Hest, coeaee lath S wte. 8.
