Three hundred deputy United States marshals were sworn in last night, taking cight hundred tn all. A like number of special policemen have also been appointed and Sworn to assist in keeping the peace to-day. At midnight the best judgment that could be formed of the situation was that there was no more reason to fear an unusual disturbance at ‘the polls to-day than at former elections. How- ever, some persons appeared to think that the very’ presence of s0 many antagonistic officials at the polis might precipitate a conilict. CONTRADICTORY ORDERS TO THR New York Po.ick.—A telegram trom New York last night says: Chief of Police Walling sent out an o1 to-night to police captains, instructing them not to receive or serve any warrants presented by private citizens. The meaning of this was Ubat the police were not to be used to arrest re- publican voters for whom warrants had been procured by private democratic citizens. Police Commissioner French informed the captains that thts order must be obeyed.
