In New York today the people have voted upon a constitutional amendment which pro- poses to pension supreme court Jadyes. Tae question of penstoning civil officers has been frequently aiscussed in this country, partica- Jarly since tne war of the rebellioa, and there- fore the expression of the people of the state of New York on che subject will be of general in- terest, as it will indicate, to some extent, how the proposal 1s regarded by the voters and tax- payers. The proposed amendment in New York permits a judze of the supreme court of the State to retire at the age of 70 on full pay. One of the arguments against the proposition is that if adopted with regard to one class of civil offi-, cers it will induce those of all other classes to set to work to accomplish equally as liberal a provision for themselves. With all the states voting, there is such a wide range Of possibilities that it will hardly be safe for the Winning party to begin crowing before to- morrow afternoon. ‘The chief interest in the election in South Carolina centers around the Congressmen. The Tepublicans are concentrating thelr efforts upon two districts, and they attach more tm- portance to winning the two Congressmen than to Work'ng, with the odds against them. for the electoral ticket. In the Charleston district, E. W. M. It appears that the recent heated state canvass exhausted the de- Mocracy of Georgia, and they are disposed to take things too easy. The democratic majority in thestate ts so large, say the organs, that there ts danger of too many voters acting upon the presumption that they can ve spared from the polis. << ‘The respectable press of the country with one accord denounce the indecent siyle of warfare adopted by John Kelly against James Gordon Bennett solely tn retaliation for the criticisms Of the Herald! upon Mr. Kelly’s political course in New York city.
