The grienback “craze” took a popular hold upon the peoole of Missourt, and tt has not lost 1's popularity yet in the state, by any means, ‘Two years ago, In the congressional race, the Sreenbackers polled a total vote of nearly 35,000, While the republicans polled only 55,00. There ‘Were 20 straight greenbackers to 18 repub'icans Glected to the legislature. In the 4th, 5th, Sih 9th and 11th districts the republicans did no Tun candidates for Congress, but, by a sort of Mutual understanding, supported the grecaback candidates. The coalition succeeded only in one aistrict—the %b—where a republican greea- backer was clected. The democrats cast anu ag- Bregate vote for Congressmen of over 175.000, The greenback organization drew i from both the old parties in, apparently, about equal numbers. In the present canvass the greenbackers and republicans are each running & state ticket, but they have untted upon candt- dates for Congress in all the districts where there Is chance for the democrats to be beaten. The fustonists claim that th will carry four districts—the 6th, Sch, 9th and 12th— where the combined vote of the opposition two Years ago left the democrats tna minority Fanging from 2,000 to 5,000. In the sth district ‘there are two democrats running. each claim ing to bave been regalarly nomtnated, While the democrats do not concede & single district to the opposition, they are Somewhat aiarmed, and would read! mise for a delegation to the nes Standing as the present one does—12 democrats and One republican. The coalition between the Yepublicans and greenbackers has been effect, ively arranged, and both parties to the agree- ment are working Industrtously, but the figures show that a combination of two parties rarely ever bas been able to poll as high a vote as their aggregrate strength when voting Separately. Where democrats and green backers have combined it has had the effect of driving the republicans who had joined the Sreenbackers back to their old party, and where Tepublicans have joined with nationals, demo- cratic greenbackers break from the proposed fusion, It is upon this that the democrats are counting to save them In Missouri. They main- tain that the appearance of republicans in a congressional fight will awaken the old spirit and animosity of democratic greendackers and send them back to their old party assoclates. If this calculation proves incorrect, and the demo- rats do los* four, or even two districts fa Mts- sourt, then the party will undoubtedly also lose the next Congress. ——_-<re-__. It seems to be a matter of tmpossibiiity for the managers of either side to keep party lines distinctly drawn and party organization tntact, in the great cities of New York and Brookiyn. in the former the democrats are anything but united on the nomination for mayor, and now, in Brooklyn, an independent repubtican has been brought out for Congress, In the third dis- tion to Mr. Chittenden. Some of men first nominated this tade- Pendent candidate, and now the democrats, With the purpose, no doudt, of dividing tae re- Publicans ss much as possible, have endors:d bim. It ts not probable that Mr. Chittenden, the regular republican nominee can be beaten, but the democratic idea, perhaps, 13 that 12 re- Publican votes can be obtained for Smith, the independent, the Gartleld ticket may sutfe somewhat. Two years ago the republicans cas 16,867 votes tn the district to 10 7 the demo Crats and about 2,000 scaitering, a republican majority of 4,000. ‘The politicians of New York ard Brooklyn, republican and democratic both, are considered as the shrewdest tn this country, and In a contest Ike the present it is diamond ext dizmond. —_~+-—_____ The agreement entered into between the ‘Virginia readjusters and the republicans. by Which the Congressional candidates of the latter have been withdrawn tn several districts, Promises to be a boomerang for the readjusters. By the terms of the reported arrangement re- Publicans are to support readjuster candidates for Congress in order to defeat the regalara, Democratic readjusters have taken alarin at the signs of a coalition wita their old-time opponents, and many of them are proclaiming themselves fn favor of the regular democratic Ucket. The various democratic papers are Printing the names of men, some of them lately Jeaders in the readjuster ranks, who have gone over to the regulars in the past two or three days. If this thing continues it may cause a stampede that will leave the readjusters sadly behind In the race. The next President will probably have it in his power to appoint a majority of the judges of the U.S. Supreme Court. Justices Hunt and Cilfford are both suffering from paratytic Strokes, and {t 1s not probable they will remata upon the bench much longer, even though tu partially recover health. Justice ae fs Years old, and Justice Strong 372. It ts satd that both of them contemplate retiring as the ey have the right todo. Justice Milier has on the bench twenty years, and ts 63 years of Sge. He, too, has the right to retire. Just! Bradley ts G7, and will probably remain on the bench for some years yet. From this it appears that should the party which sucesed3 the Present administration in power desire to effect a change in the Supreme Court, it can be done ‘Without the necessity of legislation to that end. Count Von Moltke, the greatest soldier ot Europe, was 50 years of age the other day, and the Emperor of Germany proposed to sur; the old general and reward him, too, by ating bim a prince in honor of theevent. To the surprise, however, of the Emperor, Von Moltke declined the proffered honor; he did no* | care for the title. The general has honors enough that he has won for himself, and evi- ently did not believe that a cap sheaf to his crown of laurels would add anything to his glory here or hereafter. But men who retuze to be princes are rare. ——___—<.-_______ ‘The Cinctnnat! Soctety for the Suppresston of Music is going to hold a congratulatory mass meeting over the destruction by fire of three hundred plance in New York last day. It ts stated that the London reform clue has Falsed £270,000 for general election purposes, ‘The Dukes of Devonshire and Bedford are said To bave given £45,000 each, and the Duke of ‘Wer tininster a still larger sum. The expenditure Of that amount of money may tend to bring about a “reform” tn elections in England, but in this Country it would produce precisely the opposite result. What we need, and, we susp>2t, wha" England needs also, is to discourage the raistag and paying out of money during poilt- esi campaigns. As things go now, in both Cour ‘ries, the enormous sums of money required for election purposes constitute an onerous tax on those contributing It, and a direct agency of emor Jization and fraud.
