nnn nnn ee —E*™4 BAHGALNS IN DRY GOODS. GBas> OPENIN: THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. WEDNESDAY.......October 27, 1880. CROSBY S. NOYES....Editors California Next Tuesday. California Is one of thestates that the demo- crats consider doubtful in the coming election, while the republicans express confidence of their ability to retain the hold they have, with but few exceptions, and those in off years maintained upon the state. The main Issue there fs the question of Chinese immigration, and the plank on that subject in both the party Platforms was constructed, no doubt, with the View to winning votes In Callfornta, Oregon and Nevada. in fact, however, the voting m Cal ifornfa bas been too close in past years to war- rant any feeling of absolute confidence tn its political status. In the presidential election of 1576 the total vote cast in the state was 155, ef which Hayes received 79,269 ard Tilden 44, a republican majori- ty of 2505. Peter Cooper, greenbacker, only got 44 votes for President. In the state election 1sv9 the republicans ran a straight Uoket, the democrats united with one faction of the workIngmen and there was, besides, a Straight workingmens’ ticket. The total vote cast was 1¢ of whieh the republicans polied 6, the Gemocratic-fusionists 47,562, and the workinginen 44,620, a republican majority over the next bighest of 20,408. The combined oppo sition tothe republicans showea a majority 0° 24,212, but party lines were so disrupted that those figures do not now represent the strength Of either side. The republicans made a straight fight, and sought to maintain party organiza. tion, but in the general confuston prevailing that was simply impossibie. Various ques- tions of local interest entered into the canvass and disrupted the old political organizations. Evenso stalwart a republican as Mr. Gorham, ex-secretary of the Senate, took the stump against the regular ticket of his party. Inthe present canvass It is reasonable to suppose that the republicans have derived Some advantage from the maintenance of their party organization in last year’s contest while tke democratic party was disrupted. Those who, like Mr. Gorham, differed with the party on state questions have returned, and the or- ganization ts sald to be excellent. Efforts were Made to merge the workingmen with the demo- crats for this year, and partially succeeded. Dennis Kearney objected and has kept up a fustlade on his own hook and with his followers. The effects of Chinese immi- gration have been felt so directly by the people of California that they are nearly unanimous against a continuance of the inflow of Mongolians. They desire, and in fact de. mand, legislation that will check or stop this immigration, and ff there were any material difference between the republican and demo cratic platforms on this subject {t would require BO power of prophecy to foretel! that the state would vote for the party which opposed the further coming of the Chinese. As it is, with both parties promising relief in this direction, the result will be decided, perhaps, by the best organization and hardest work. Virginia Politics. ‘The readjusters In Virginia exhibit no signs of weakness yet, but on the contrary are pushing their canvass with, apparently, renewed vigor. They are now pitehing into Barnum and the national democratic committee savagely for having “interfered” in the political affairs of thestate. The Richmond Whig, central organ Of the readjusters, declares expiicitly that Gen. Hancock was apposed to the action of the ns- Uonal committee in {ts recoguition of the funders; that Hancock was appealed to to have that action revoked and he replied: “The com- mittee have the machine in charge; | am only a Passenger.’ It may have been and probably was Gen. Mahone, himself, who appealed to Hancock and recetved the reply as given In the Whig, though that journal does not state this. Immediately after the announcement that the national committee had determined to recog- nize the funders and before the addres3 was issued, the presence of Gen. Mahone, accom- fanied by several other prominent readjusters, was reported in New York, and It was assumed that thelr purpose was to Induce Mr. Barnum to keep his hands out of the stat fight. Failing with him, it ts quite likely that they called upon General Hancock and heard his declination to interpose on the ground that he was “only a passenger.’’ The Whig calls Chatrman Barnum a “greater humbug” than the celebrated showman of the same name, and says, “We (the readjusters) spit upon the manifesto of Barnum, Balaam & Co., and will beat their patent outside s>-called democratic party of Virginia by over 30,000 ma- jority,” and adds that on election day Barnum will be “taught that Virginia is not a good piace for bis mule business.” The D'spatch, chiet organ of the funders, or regulars, is more dignified in its tone than th Whig, and is, evidently, trying the force of persvasion. It charges that the read- Juster leaders are not honest in their suppori of Hancock, but are ruled by selfish purposes en- Urely. The readjusters profess to be entirely confident of success, basing thelr calculations upon the victory they won last year, but, as up- Wards of 100, democrats did not vote In that election, this estimate may prove to be far from correct. The indications are that a pretty full demoeratic vote will be polied next Tuesda:’ aud that the colored vote will be larger t! has been calculated upon, as these voters are Paying up their capitation tax. ——~--___ Cincinnat! is the most active and dangerous competitor of Louisville for the southera trade, and In thelr rivalry the two cities have now brought pelitics into the commercial field. During the present political canvass Loulsville merchants Lave selzed upon every utterance of Cimetnnati papers that could be construed into disrespect towards the south to convince buy- ers of that section that they ought not to deal with the Queen City. Some days ago there was Published tn Lou!sville what purported to bea letter from a Cincinnati merchant, in whien the ‘south was denounced unsparing! The alleged merchant declared that the southern trade was an injury rather than a benefit; that the buy- ersct that section were swindlers, and never Paid their bills when they could avoid it. The publication of this letter has aroused the Cio- cinnat! merchants, and the chamber of com- merce has appointed a committee of five to Visit the Louisville editor and demand from him tue name of the author, Whether the letter was really written by a Cin- cinnatl merchant, or was gotten np in Louisville, will, perhaps, soon be determined but in either case, its effect upon the trade of the two rival cities would not probably amount {to enough to pay the expenses of the chamber of commerce committee on its trip to Louts- Ville. In matters of business all men are Pretty much alike. They do not take sentiment ‘nto consideration, when it comes to a question Of profit or loss. The southern merchant when he goes to buy his next stock of goods will not be likely to stop to ask who wrote that letter, or whether it is genuine or forged. He wili endeavor to find out whether Cincinnati can sell him goods upon more advantageous terms than Louisville, and ff she can he will go there and buy. If he does not, thes indeed, ts the southern merchant different from his class elsewhere. Tle business men of this country are tco practical, too sensible and too pro- gressive, to ever permit politics or religion to eway ccmmeree. ——-~<re-___. ‘The opinions of the two Senators from New Xetk ss to .ne way that state will vote next ‘Tuesdsy furnish an spt tlustration of the effect (hat 4 mans desires hag upon his judgment. Sebster Conkitog is confident that @arfleld will cuty New York by 29,000 majority, and Senator Kerbon belleves Hancock will get & majorly sepiceented by the same figures, ELEGANT DAMASSE SILKS at $2 and $2.50.
