Mr, Clarke was born at Vansville, Prince George County, Maryland, but removed to th's elty when about 9 years of age, with his fatuer, the late Robert Clarke, who, for a long series of years was a magistrate tn East Washing<on. The deceased was attached to the Marsual’s office nearly his entire life, and was for over 40 years the doorkeeper of the U. 8. Supreme court room. For several years past he has been in bad health—a lung affection. He leaves a fambiy—his son, John A. See advt. ——<_—__s>___—__—_ FIGHTING OVER A WoMAN’S VOTE.—At the annual school election in the town ot New Lets, last Tuesday, Mr. David Hopkins secured the office of comrissioner, as is Mr. Gustave Dettlof at the eleventh hour, when the | victory was about to be decided in Mr. Dettioil’s favor, by bringing to the polling place in Wagons the wives and marriageable daughters of the farmers in the township. It was not known to Mr. Dettiofi’s friends that the law entitling women to vote was in operation, and the trap which Mr. Hopkins laid paralyzed them suddenly. Louis Meisuer recovered from his shock sufficiently to solicit the vote of one of the ladies for Mr. Dettloff. Willlam Carroll called upon her to remain steadfast in the Hop- king faith. Melsuer then called Carroll a fraud. Carroll retorted, and Meisuer proceeded to carry ont bis teat to “puncm the head off” of Car- roll. A lively fight ensued in which Carroil was worsted. H+ afterward caused Melsuer’s fmrrest, and on Wednesday the latter was tried by a jury, before Justice Spencer, in East New York.
