THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. THURSDAY..........October 21, 1880. Ss CROSBY S. NOYES.... Editor, fhe Evening Star has@ regular, yerma- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paver published in Washington, and equal totha of ali the other daily papers here added to- gether. ————————— ‘The Double Sheet on Saturday. THE Star will be fssued on Satarday in double-sheet form of fifty-six columns, or eight pages. It will be an unusually fater- esting number, containing a large amount of Opginal and selected matter, including letters, special telegrams, etc., from all quarters. Advertisers and newsdealers will please send im their orders early as possible for this enlarged and extra edition. The number of mew advertisements printed thus far in Ucto- ber ts 1,319. Seme Contested States. ‘The states which, besides New York, are now being hotly contested by both parties and upon which the result of the presidential election may depend, are New Jersey and Connecticut. Botirthese states are claimed by the democ- Facy and are relied upon to give them success. In the presidential election of 1876 In New Jer- Sey Tilden received 115,962 votes, Hayes 103,517, Peter Cooper 712, scattering 43, a democratic majority over Hayes of 12,445, and over all of 11,690. The next election was for governor in when there were four candidates in the field—democratic, republican, greenback and Prohibitionist. The democrats cast 97,S49 votes to 55,09 by the republicans, 5,069 by the green- backers and 1,433 by the probtbitionists, a democratic majority over the republicans of 12,746. The next election was held In 1373 for Congressmen and sheriffs. The aggregate democratic vote for sheriffs was 82,576, republi- can 94,951, greenback 16,795; republican ma- Jority over the democrats of 12 The aggre- gate vote for Congressmen in 1578 was, republi- can 90,514, democrat 79,938, greenback 14,7: republican majority over the democrats of 10,576. The total vote for sheriffs and Con- gressmen show that the bulk of the green- backers were from the democratic party. The iast election held in New Jersey was in 1879 for members of the assembly. The total vote cast im the state then was 163,659, of which the democrats polled $0,557, the republicans 79,190, the greenbackers & democratic majority over the republicans of 1,. ‘The figures show that whenever the greenback vote Increased the Gemocratic vote decreased, and vice versa, In 1si8, when the greenbackers polled 16,795 votes, the democrats were, a3 compared with the re. Publican vote, left in a minority of over 12,000; but tn 1579, when the greenbackers fell off to less than 5,000 the democrats once more deat the repubifeans. AS a matter of course the voting for county officers and members of the assembly does not shi the precise party strength on either side, as very frequently local questions and interests enter into such electious, but the figures furnish a basis for calculations as to the result of the coming election. Tue total vote of each party in 1579 shows, as compared with the total of 1876, a demo- cratic decrease of 35.405 and a republican loss of In making estimates of the approaching Presidential election it is reasonable to suppose that both parties will bring out their full vote. In the election in Connecticut, in 1576, the total vote cast was 122, of which Tilden re- ceived 61,934 and Hayes 59,034, a democratic ma- jority of 2,900. For governor the same year Hubbard (dem) was elected over Robinson (rep.) by a majority 0; The greenbackers entered the gubernatorial electton of is7s, and then the democrats were defeated. The total Vote cast that year was 104,741, of which there- Publicans cast 45,367, the democrats 46,385 and the greenbdackers §,314,a republican majority Over the democrats of 2,451. Th total vote for Congressmen in 1878 was 104,257, of which the Fepublicans polied 51,761, the democrats 48,903 and the greenvackers 3,215, with a few scatter- Ing. There has not been an election held in Connecticut since 1573, but in that state, as Well as New Jersey, the greenbackers drew Most of thelr votes from the demozrats and left them in the mizority. In the present contest the democrats in both states claim that their voters who went off with the greenbackers have generally returned to their party allegiance, and that, consequently, they (the democrats) wil! musier their former Strength. The republicans claim that they have made inroads upon the democracy, especially by the tariff agitation; that the mechanics and factory hands who have heretofore voted with the democrats will support Garfield, to a large extent, at least sufficient to carry the state, ‘The conditions and political interests of New dersey and Connecticut are very similar, and What changes votes in one state Is almost cer- tain to have the same effect tn the other. The democrats In both states are devoting them- selves almost exclusively to meeting the tariff issue, and they assert that they have overcome the “scare” that did exist among factory hands. hh states the present legislatures are re- pudilcan, in each the republicans have a Majority of the senators who will hold over and Vote for U. S. Senators next winter. The weakest among the states classed as rell- ably deinoeratic ts Delaware, and stace the west- erm elections the republicans have announced their purpoze tomake an effort to carry that Uttle state. In the presidential election of 1576 the total vote cast was 24,135, of waich Tilden got and Hayes 1 tie ma- Jority of 2.629. In thi a for goveraor in ISS the greenbackers only opposed th: cats, and the The total vot 1 Gimoerats polled 10,730 and the greenbacke: 2,535, a democratic majority of 7,395. That year tke republicans did not run elther a state or Congressional ticket. In a recent local election 2 of Wilmington, and that encourages them to make an efloct for the orai vote. ——-<+e-_____ ‘The circumstances u Twhich the alleged er of ¢ il G ld on the Chinese and labor question has been brought before the pxb- lic are such as to give rise to grave doubts as to its genuineness, quite independgp: of that gon- tleman’s prompt declaration that 1t13 a fered. ‘The story fs that it was found amoag the papers of a dead man, somewhere up in Massachusetts, This is a conventent but not very convincing Way of accounting for {t. “Dead men tell no tales.” When an article of doubtful nature or origin is found in possession of a cadaver the acors of successful inquiry as to where it came trom and under what circumstances are pretty effectually closed. Add to the syispicious fea tures of the case Gen. Garfleld’s explielt and post tive denial that he ever wrote any such letter, and the early and effectual entombment of the Story may be counted upon with confidence despite what anybody may belleve or say they believe about resemblances in handwriting. + It ts a noteworthy fact that, according to the Chief of Police of Baltimore, there were rather fewer arrests In that city during its recent celebration exercises than for the same period Of time anywhere during the last year or two, notwithstanding the great number of persons ef all classes thus brought together. It was ObseFvable, too. that the number of cases of Grunkerness was not larger than usual, and That when such did occur they were almost invariably hilarious and good-natured in char- acter, and rarciy resulted In a disturbance of any Kind. These facts are not only creditabic in the bighest degree to the Monumental City, but they serve also to Mlustrate in the most forcible manner the moral growth of the whole cour- try. A generation or two ago it would not have Deen possible to furnish such a record of any Similar festivities any where in the United States. —_—__~+-_____ Chilt and Peru are still hammering away at ach other despite the efforts made to bring about @ cessation of hostilities.
