Exhibits, Awards, the Races, Etc. The fair opened up dull to-day, and with a very slim attendance. The weather was threat- ening and gloomy until noon, when it cleared away. Most of those on the fair grounds up to noon were country people from Virginia and Maryland. tees Ba a8 arule well pleased with the various exhibits, though the most of them seemed to be taken by the very fine and varied display of agricultural machinery, all of which is kept in motion constantly, the’ steam power now being Im full working order. Thi (display of cattle has not received the attengion it deserves from city visitors. Itis much fer than that of last year as regards guality, and much larger as ee quantity. The herd of Jersey shown ir. Thos. L. Hume comes in for = admiration from all lovers of tne cattle. THE TURF SPORTS. The trotting horses have gone and many of them are taking Ve in race3 which are being trotted in Harrisburg, Pa., this afternoon. The runners who are to take’ part in the races on Friday and Saturday will arrive to-morrow, though one or two are expected to-night, Those that are now in Baltimore waiting to take part in the Pimlico races, which are to be run next Week, will not come over until Thursday morn- ing. ‘There will be a pacing race to-morrow. On ‘Thursday the tournament will take place. ‘It Is La rie to hurry the tournament up this time, so that it will not take as long to settle the question as to the best rider_as on the occasion of the tournament on the fair grounds last fall. ‘There is some talk of making It a nine ring tour- hament, instead of the orainary three ring affair. The noon train brought out several hun- dred persons, brightening up the prospects for the afternoon very much. PRIZES AWARDED TO DAY. Mr. Perry said he would claim that if Beckett had killed Poindexter, and was guilty of murder, the killing of a third party was murder also’ and so if he bad been guilty of manslaughter if he had killed Poindexter, the kiliing of the third party was manslaughter also. Mr. Cook, for the defense, sald that he would claim, and endeavor to show, that the death was not the result of the act of Beckett, but was the resuit of the treatment of the wound—in other words the treatment caused deat ‘he court re- marked that the question hinged on what was &@ mortal wound, and that was a question of fact for the jury. Mr. Perry ms the 0} argument for the government, claiming a verdict under the evi- gence. He hastened to the spot and managed to recover $459 of the amount, among it the $20 note gotten by the lady mentioned above.
