EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. asc ees ++++--October 12, 1880. TUESDAY. CROSBY 8S. NOYES....Editor. ————————————————————————————————— fhe Evening star has@ regular, perma- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paver published in Washington, and equal totha of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. — ‘THE Braz office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or busines can be sent day or night, free of charge. The Elections To-day. ‘Three state elections are tn progress t}-day— ‘Obio, Indiana and West Virgin'a. ato elezts a secretary of state, a judge and a clerk of the supreme couri, a member of the board of public Works, a stat? school commitsstoner and tweaty Members of Congress. Ind'ana elects a gov- ernor, Heutenant governor, secretary of state, audttor, treasurer, attorney general, a clerk and areporier of the supreme court, supe: ntendent Of pubite instraction, two supreme court judges and thirteen members of Congress. West Vir- ginta elects a governor, auditor, treasurer, at torney general, supreme court Judge and super- Infendent of schools. The Congressmen in that State are not elected until November 23. Ib Ohio the republicans, democrats and greenback- ers have tickets In the tid, but tue race 13 be- tween the two old parties, the greonback vote, belug, apparently, scarely large enough to be considered. Judge Lang, a German of promt- Bence, heads the democratic ticket, and the party counts upon his receiving a large number of German republican votes. Mr. Townsend heads the republican ticket. In the present House the democrats have eleven members of Congress and the republicaus nine, but last year the old districting law was re enact7d, and as It is favorable to the republicans they calcu- late upon electing not less than twelve Con- gressmen to-day. The democrats count confl- dently upon electing six Congressmen and hope to get tcp. In Indiana, Landers and Porter head the democratic and repudjican tickets, respectively, and a3 party lines are distinctly drawn they are expected, each, to poll the vote that bis party will recetve. Some of the repub- ican leaders maintain that Porter 13 stronger than his party and will get democratic votes, but the exciting campaign and high party feeling existing render this very improbable. ‘The democrats of Indiana have In the past kept Solid ranks through thetr political fights, and they will, no doubt, be equally as well discip- lined in this contest. Since the last Congres Sional election the democratic legislature has Fedistricted the state with a view to party advantage, and therefore it 1s reasonable to conclude that a majority of the delezation elected to-day will be democrats. In the present House there are six democrats, six republicans and one greenbacker. In the next House the democrats will very probably have Seven and perhaps eight members from that state. In West Virginia the greenbackers are making the only organized fight against the democrats. Efforts to unite greenbackers and republicans were made, but failed substantially. The oppo- sition bas been so weak that the democrats have not felt cailed upon to exert themselves par- Ucularly. The democratic ticket will be elected by a majority ranging from 3,000 to 12,000. The letters of Lum exposing the alleged bargain between Weaver and the republicans have been used effectively by the democrats In West Vir- ginia to disrupt the greenback party. In Obio the republicans would, in all proba- bility, elect fourteen or fifteen of the Congress- men if it were not for Internal quarrels in three or four districts. While these dissensions do not affect the republican state ticket, the effect will be to weaken the candidates of that party for Congress in several districts. —--______ A meeting of leading citizens of Indianapolis, representing both parties, was held yesterday as stated In THE Stak, and the action ought to go far towards securing a peaceable and fair election in that city. Among the democrats present were Senator McDonald and Mr. Eng- Ush, while such prominent republicens as U. 8. Judge Gresham and U. S. Attorney Halstein represented that party. A resolution declaring in favor of a fair end honest elect‘on, and demanding that the election oMicers shall per- form their duty without partisan bias was adopted. The meeting pledged the influence of both parties to punish legal voters,.no matter iu whose interest the™fraud may be attempted It also turns out that the reported secret organi- zation of militia forces by the democratic state Officials 1s entirely untrue, and upon the whole with the strong men of the two opposing par ties working together for a fair election, it does 400k as if such an one mtght be he'd ‘There is considerable oppos tion being devel- oped In New York to the‘project for the estab- lishment of an international park at Niagara Falls. The basis of the opposition 1s that the money the state of New York would be required to pay for the park must be raised by taxation. It ts estimated that New York county would be faxed over $9,000,000, Kings county about $500,000, and other counties in proportion, to make up the sum necessary, should the next legislature pass the Dill for the purchase of the perk. The leading opponents of the project de- hounce it as a scheme of a few property owners at Niagara and others to make money. On the conttary, sone of the most prominent men of New York urge that the establishment of the international! park 1s necessary tn order to pre- serve Niagara and tts magnificent scenery from the despoiling hand of speculation. —____--_____ According to the Philadelphia Ledger, an au thority upon the coal trade, the entire produc- Uon of extbracite for the last nine montas of the year Is estimated at sixteen and a quarier milion of tons, a reduction of about two and a baif million below the output of the corres- Fonding mouths of last year. The Ledger ands that negotiations are pendlug the several companies looking to a pension of about a week in the beginning of November, to be followed by halt-time during the winter months, tn order to open the spring trade with light stocks of coal. It this plan ts edopt-d the total production of 1830 will be from two and three-quarters to three militonsof tons less than that of 1 —_——--+e —___ ing day of Baltimore’s celebration exceeded the expectations of the people of that efty in tke uposing display aud large attead- y Streets were thronged with vis- early morping and every feature of aia Was carsled out w.thout a single The unusual and tmaposing spectacle of six mouster steamships for Europe all going down the bay at the same t'me, ina single line pre- cession, as It Were, Was presented In New York harbor last Saturday morning. The U: S. Couré held that Daven Port had done bts duty, but suggeste4 that in bis dir ctions to supervisors he had gone a Uttle too far and that bts language ought to be modl- fed.
