OPENING OF THE SECOND WEEK OF THE EXHIBI- TION. “To-day is dead horse certain.” This was the first remark that greeted the ear of Tus Star reporter as he entered the fair grounds this morning. The English of the remark is that there was a strong probability of there being a small attendance to-day. The prophecy proved to be correct. Up to noon but few, very few, had come, though the arrivals after that hour were brisk at times, though nct exceedingly ni merous. The Baltimore show did all the busi- ness to-day, and not only attracted visitors but was strong enough to draw even the exhibitors from the fair. Gathered here and there were groups of policemen, fakirs, the chuck-a-luck or wheel of fortune men, Ucket takers, horsemen and others, all of whom seemed to be discussiog the situation, It was said that the fair people would have done better if they haa contented themselves with one week's fair, instead of running it over to two weeks. Ove man said he thought the fox hunt to-morrow wouid draw weil, and that the runniny meeting on Friday and Saturday would be well attended, even If there were but few in attendance on the other days. Capt. Frank Hoiiinyshead, who is re up the running races, sides with the last speaker. He sald the running races, whicn always have been attractive to Washingion peo- pie, will crowd the grounds, THE EXHIBITORS IN HORTICULTURAL HALL, who have done so much to make their show at tractive, display enterprise in constantly re newing thelr perishable exhibits. A meeting of the “friends of religion and morality” was held at Lincoln hail yesterd! afternoon to consider the liquor license ques- tion. There were on the platform Revs. G. W. Leech, Who led, Rev. Drs. Rankin, Noble Hayhe, Rev Messrs. Kelly, Steele, Little, J. W. Smith, Powers, Dennison, Kramer, ‘Kelly, ‘Wynkoop and others, and In the audience were Judge Spell and many prominent church mem- bers. The singing led by Mr. C. Burlew was ac- companied by organ, cornet, flute and violins. The meeting was opened by stnging the hyma “cCcronation.” and Rev. A. F. Steele. of the P. E. church offered prayer. Rev. Mr. Leech made the opening address and ‘stated that. the object was to secure a more rigid enforcement of the law. Our youth Should be protected. They had pr’sonted @ memorial asking the District Commis- sloners for a reorgauization of the license board and had received a reply showing that some good had been pee pind, that some progress had been made; but it was a pity that the rules the Commissioners have adopted were not put in force a year ago. While from some portions of the answer they feel a degree of Satisfaction, yet taken as a whole ft is unsatistactory, for the Commissioners decline to accept the suggestion to appoint a new board; in fact, their answer 15 a complete vindication ‘of the present board. The ministers (lo not agree to the statement of the Commisstoners that the license board has been faithiul to its dutles, bit say that ta some instanees they have not Ferforinéd their duty. ‘The law was Violated in grantiag a lc the Theater Comtqua; tu issulnz Meen Places fronting on “government property: and in Issuing a license to Bernard Henze at the ccrner of 7th and F strests against the protests of citizens ia thta neiza- borhood. ‘The very character of this meeting shows that the answer 13 not satisfactory.
