THE EVENING STAR. WASHING a EONDAY.. ieber 11, 1880. CROSBY S. NOYES....Editors than double that of any other daily paver published in Washington, and equal totha of ali the other daily papers here added to- gether. —————————— ‘Tre Bran office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information Or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. Ohio and Indiana. The display part of the political canvass in bio and Indiana Is done, with now, and the t'me for quiet and hard work, the “‘judicious’’ use of money, bas arrived. Conflicting reports and predictions are sent from those stat2s, but, taking the only practical way of art.ving at a future event—by carefully considering the past—no reason appears why Ohio should not republican and Indiana democratic. In the first place there are no indications of any de- cided change of sentiment tn favor of or against either of the parties. Both are well organtzed, and in view of the important bearing of this election upon that for President, it 1s likely that each party will bring out {ts entire vote. During the last ten years Ohio has been carried three times by the democrats, in October elections, These democratic victories were !n 1873, 1874 and 1577 ; but the vote each time was light, and showed a larger falling off of republicans than demo- crats. In fact, the result each year was due to Tepubilcan tndtfference. In every closely con- tested election the republicans have won by majorities ranging frpm 5,000 to 29,000. It Is reasonable to conclude that a full republican vote will be brought out to-morrow, as the efforts of nearly all the brillant leaders of the party have been devoted for several weeks to that end. Early I the canvass there was a feeling among republicans that taey could hold the state without spectal effort, and they dl- rected their energies mainly to Indiana. Sev- eral weeks ago, however, ft became appar- ent that the democrats were taking ad- vantage of the confidence of thelr opponents to carry on a “satill-hunt,” with the purpose of forcing every democratic voter out to the polls. The republican managers seemed to realize suddenly that they had taken too much for granted with regard to Ohio, and a most determined and vigorous canvass was entered upon, beginning with the meeting at Warren, over which Gen. Grant presided. The democratic leaders admit that the republicans dave made good headway in the past two weeks and will bring out all their vote, which is equivalent to saying they will carry the state. In the October elections for ten years past the republicans carried Ohio in 1870 by a majority Of 16,665, In 1S71 Dy 20,163, In by 12,104, in Sen in 1876 by 5,784, in 1S7S by 3,154, In The democrats carried October elections in by majority, in 1s74 by 17292, and in by 22,520. Last year, when Foster was elected governor, the largest vote ever polled was cast, but Gov- «rnor Foster bimself says that as at least 5,000 hard-money democrats voted for him in preference to Ewing, the result—17,129 republican majority—did not indicate the re- ‘Spective strength of the two parties. The dem- Ocrats, however, insist that comparisons of the vote cast to-morrow shall be made with that of 1si9. This isa straw, showing that the demo- crats really do not expect to carry the state; that their object ts to compare with last year in order to claim any decrease from Foster's vote agarepublican loss. The best authenticated opinion appears to be that the republicans will carry the state by not less than 5,000 and pos- ‘sibly not more than 10,000. As to Indtana, It has been more uniformly demccratic for ten years than Onto has been republican, and there ts nothing to show that the democrats are any weaker in that state this year, or the republicans any stronger, relatively, than im past years. At the October election of si0 the democrats got 2,555 majority im the state, In 18:2 a Majority of 1,337, in 1874 Of 17,252, In 1876 of 5,054 and in isiS of 14,113. It appears that at €ach of the last three elections the democrats have increased their majority. Tne democratic leaders of Indiana are among the ablest mea of that party in the Union, and allof them have Worked in this canvass with more di!'gence and energy than ever before. They reai'ze the im- portance of holding the state true to its poll- tical colors, and have so drilled the party Voters. The numerous reports of changes here and there, first to oneside and then tothe other, count for nothing. It Is only an evidence of the effect of money. In the face of the flerce contention of the past two months no doubt voters have taken their places firmly in the ine of the party they believe In, respectively, and the purchased Voters will, perhaps, about offset each other. Roughs and repeaters are in Indianapolis for both parties, but their presence and characters are known, and no doubt there are honest Voters enough of both parties to preyeat these aliens from so corrupting the ballot-box as to misrepresent the sentimment of the state. Up tothe very last moment democrats will con- Unue to claim Ohio and republicans to claim Indiana, but the claim on each side is put forth for the sate reason—to keep democrats at work in Indlana and republicans busy in Onto. Should the republicans concede Indiana to the democrats, the latter would forthwita send ail their spare money into Ohio, and the same tactics would be employed as to Indiana, if the democrats were to concede Ohio to the repub- Heaps. ————————— ‘This ts the opening day of Balttmore’s sesqut- centenpial celebration, and from all accounts the promises freely made of a grand and tmpos- log demonstration are entirely fulfilled. Tae city, with all its Population and interests, is given over to this celebration. All the houses are decorated tn splendid style, many with eM@- boration that is expensive as well as beautiful. Already vistiors have begun to arrive in every incoming train and the thoroughfares are crowded. The spirit manifested in this cel bration accounts for the rapid progress Baltl- more has msde since it was founded 150 years ago. The celebration beginning to-day will ex- tend through this week and include Tuesday of ext week. The program arranged presents a varied entertainment, mainly spectacular in ‘ts character, opening to-day with the history and progress of the city represented by allegorical tableaux, a procession of industrial associations and addres; Tuesday (to-morrow), parade of Masonic organizations and school children; Wednesday, parade of military organizations, Ure department, police, &c.; Thursday, parade Of religious, benevolent and temperance socie- tes; Friday, parade of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and other secret societies in their rega- lias and uniforms; Saturday, parade of colored organizations. On Tuesday ot next week the celebration will be concluded with a general illumination of the city and pyrotechnic display in the evening. a ‘The New York city democrats, Mr. John Kelly in the lead, have reconsidered their advice that Voters should use violence in resisting John I Davenport, and now the courts are called upon % check the latter in his alleged high-handed Proceedings. Davenport has shown himselt a Partisan; but the democrats would not gain abytbing by a resort to violence. The United States courts have evinced a readiness to pro- tect the rights of citizens, and tbts leaves no excuse for apy resort to tliega! means. The court will sit on registration and election days, to hear compiatnts of voters against Ualted States election ofticials. -20e-—___ ‘The political papers bristle with exclamation Petnts, coupled with job-type announcements of Lo 1ibie plots concocted by the opposition to destroy the purity of the batlot box and stifle the public voice.
