_~ party allegiance, THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. TUESDAY. October 5, 1880. ~~ eRosry Ss. NOY . Editor, fhe Evening Star has @ regular, permz- mens. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paver published in Washington, and equal totha of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. Tue 81x office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. -Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news. or any information or business can be sent dsy or night, free of charge. i The Georgia Election To-morrow. ‘The Georgia state election takes place to-mor- row, and though the contest {3 conflned to the democratic party it !s anexcit'ng one. The ex- ettement Is all over the election of a governor. ‘The state convention, having adopted the two- thirds rule, falled to make a nomination for governor. A majority recommended Colquitt to the party, but the minority dissented and nominated ex-Senator Norwood, Regular nomi- nations for all other state ofticers were made by the convention, and they are supported by the entire party. Therefore there ts no question as to the result except with regard tothe gover- nor. Colquitt’s ids have losisted that he wasentitied tothe support of the party, because he was really the chotce of a large majority of the convention. The Norwood men hold that their candidate ts just as “regular” as Colquitt, and realiy better entitled to democratic support The most noteworthy feature of the canvass has been the appeals of democrats for the votes ot colored men. During the past week or two the Norwood men have grown more confident, and It now looks as if the race will bevery close. It is given ont in some of the northern papers that the split in the democracy of Georgia Is likely to cost that party several Congressmen. The theory ts that the division will naturally cause dissatisfaction to spread to other candi- dates and that, both factions working to that end, wili bring out the entire colored vote, which will be cast for republican congressional candidates. This argument has been baxd upon the erroneous fdea that the election of Congressmen takes place to-morrow, also. Nore but state offlcers are chosen at to-morrow’s election. Congressmen will be voted for on the same ticket with presidential electors on the second day of November, and as the democratic party of Georgia ts a untt for Hancock this will msure a solid support for the congresstonal can- didates, The state election, really. will not have any Influence upon the national electior. The men who today are divided between Colquitt and Norwood will, after to-morrow, join in support of the national and congress- fonal candidates, and no doubt their united efforts will be brought to bear In congressional districts where republicans are running. ——~<- _. The New Complication in Virginia. The pronunctamento of Chairman Wicxham of the republican state committee, ot Virginia, calling upon all republicans to rally to the sup- port of Garfleld, puts a new phase upon the contest inthat state. Gen. Wickham Is backed by Chairman Jewell, of the nattonal committe, who promises “material aia” to thecause. This, ofcourse, Means money, as withovt it the re- Dublicans could not expect to accomplish any- thing. They have permitted the canvass to go by defanlt up to the present time. Not only is the republican party of the state with- out crgapization, but it is demoralized by reason of the fnactive and in, some instances, uncertain course pursued by the leaders. The first step necessary is organ- tration, and it requires money as weil as prompt action to accomplish this. Mr. Jewell has siz- nified his willingness to supply the fund3 necessary and already the republicans of the state are beginning to rally under the Garfield banner. The readjusters pooh-pooh the Wickham call upon his party, and say itis nothing more nor less than a scheme of the funders, alded by their republican friends, to draw off the colored vote from the Matone Ucket. Gen. Wickham ts a firm believer in ‘State credit, and used his influence in the last legislature to induee the republican member3 vo unite with the democratic funders. Gen. Mahone, however, had more influence with tne colored republicans than did the leader of their own party, and he secured their co-operation. The readjuster managers make no concealment of the fact that thelr reliance for the election of their ticket and of several Congressmen 13 matnly upon the colored vote. At the recent conterence tn Richmond, Gen. Mahone positive- y refused to abandon “falthful"Zcolored allies. In order to make an effective Canvass for Garfield, the repubiteans must overcome ‘Mahone’s influence with the colored voters, To divide that element between readjusters and republicans fs to give victory, very probably, to the funders. This ts what the readjusters allege 4s the purpose of Gen. Wickham’s movement. Meantime it 1s apparent that the call upon the republicans has produced an impression. The Richmond /ntelligencer, whieh had abandoned Garfield for Makone, !s about to return to Its It fs posstbie that If the re- publicans show any sigus of unity and harmony it may drive the two democratic factions to unite. Gen. Mahone safd, not two weeks ago, that It he saw any evidence that the state would g0 for Garfield he would withdraw his ticket rather than permtt republican success; that h's first wish was to sce Hancock elected, and he wou:d, though unwillingly, sacrifice his hold upon the state to afd tn that election. So far, though, the readjusters show no signs of yleid- ing. and the triangular contest will draw at tention to Virginia as putting Its possession among republican possibilities, Just one single week rematns for the politica! prophets to give play to their powers in regard to the Obio and Indiana elections. West Vir- gipia also votes on the 12th instant, but no par- ticular Interest attaches to it because it is gen- eralry conceded that the democrats will carry the state. There 13 one fact that ts very clear how. It fs that no matter how Onto and Indiana may vote, the vass will be fought to the end with all the vigor that characterizes it now. The party that is doomed to defeat in the west Will not make any co: raw any Of its forces. The poi will rage even more fercely than eve New York, New Jer sey ard Connecticut. 1s too much at Stake in this election for ether party to yield because of defeat on the skirmish line. The probability is that the republicans will carry Obio and the democrats Indiana, and then the Caoice of President will be as much in doubt as ever. If, however, the republicans should carry beth cf the western states, it would still be pos sible for the democrats to elect their candidate and this fact would keep up the exciting cam- paign. On the other hand the republicans might lose Obio and Indiana, and yet elect Garfield. Therefore, if there are any who are calculating upon a rest from political strife and din earlier than the November election, such persons are doomed to disappointment. —<_<$_<eo_____ It has been stated that ihe rivalry of the bonanza bosses, Sharon and Fair, for the U.S. Senatorship in Nevada was an amicable one; the competitors being the best of friends, and all that sort of thing. The indications in the Nevada papers are, however, that any good f-eling that might have existed in the start has been effectually broken up. Sharon’s news- Peper organ complains that Fair's organ heaps the vilest insults upon Sharon’s head; and Falr’s organ charges upon Sharon a resort to the most despicable tactics. Of course each ‘Side charges, and doubtless with entire truth, that theother is using bribery and corruption to buy the Senatorship. ‘The chances are that Fair will come out ahead tn the contest, a8 his barrel is the biggest, and has been tapped last, Dut in any event the result ts not likely to be creditabie to the voters of Nevada. ——————<re-_____ The town elections in Connecticut have no particular significance, but the result Yesterday 1s calculated to give the republicans some itttle 2 S2S5E stock or NEW AND CHEAP DRY @OoODsS. quality Furr Woou FRENCH DRESS ooube an al'colors, vote navy blue, wine, plum, es . ma: ParErfe Ags double White BLANKETS, 82, 82.50, eo up to lu. re White TABLE DAMABR, 50, 62, 75, +7. 1. as aA wide doubie-width Blac’ OASH- Galore CASHME! all cit pyoots 25.
