Williams, were charged with assaulting a small boy named Jobn Quill, who testified that about mid- night last Thursday night, as he was sitting on his porch, at the corner of 34 and G streets Southwest, he saw these officers pass, and said to them, “Now I've got you,” when they ran him tnto bis yard, and Willams struck at htra with his club, and witness threw a brick at them, when Dally shot at him, the bullet pass- ing through the fence, about two inches above his head, knocking a splinter off, which cut his face, and lodging in the next house. Witness Was afterwards arrested and taken to the sta- on house, and broke out and ran, and was Shot at three times by the officers, and was cane and clubbed by Williams on the way ‘o the statlonhouse. May Fisber, a colored Wornan, testified that about 12 o'clock on the night in question she saw two men. who looked like defendants, standing by Mr. Quill’s fence, and one of them said to some one, “I'l put this, pistol ball through your heart.” John Brid- Well, a white man, testified that he was passin down 3d street about half-past 12 o'clock las' Thursday night, and saw young Quill pursued by two ofGcers, who fired three shots at him and afterwards captured him. The bullet made a hole tn the fence, about five feet four Inches from the ground; which 1s about three or four inebes higher unan the boy's head. A bullet, which was exhibited to the court, was extracted from the side of a honse. about 30 feet from the fence, throach which it passed. Judge Bundy said that he did not think tha language of the boy a sufticlent provocation for the action of the officers. He had no doubt but a shot was fired by OMicer Daily through the fence. and in close proximity te the boy, and bad tt killed the boy he would be gutliy of felonious homicide. MeCoole was a very powerful man, and could hit lke a horse kicking. In his younger days he wes considered the best rough-and- tumble fighter in America. McUCoole worked ‘long-shore for several years in New Orleans, Shoulder hitters were brought from ail parts of the United States to beat him, bat he lald them allout. One of the toughest and hardest fights McCoole ever had was with the gigantic McKin- ney, of Cincinnat!, a man that was a terror in the southern country. In this fight both men were nearly killed, but McCoole outlasted Me- Kinney and won the fight. All the rough fighters after his battle with McKinney gave McCcole a wide berth, and he then turned his attention to prize fighting. At ‘rst he was very successful, beating blg Toi Jennings, the giant Blake, better known as Dublin Tricks, and Aaron Jones, an English {mportation: Jones fought Tom Sayers, Tow Paddeck, Harry Voluson, and a number of the best men fn land prior to com!ng to this country, tight with McCoole he had no show ais beat ‘Tor Davis Charley Gallagher, he champion of Ca! nd Tom Allen, the ed him in is63, and MeCoole did nothing notable atterward. He was six fect one inch in height, and fought at about 210 pounds. He was bora i Ireland, and was 49 years of age.—Y, F. Sun, O-AAY. A Wary ED A strange lay to a lady who had been going out much to evening parties—more, some People asserted, than her husband ap- roved of. Returning one evening very late, she found both the knocker and door-bell carciully removed, and no possible means of waking the sleeping househeld, among whom was her do- mesic the first question, and “Who had done 1:2” the second, which occurred to the lady and toa friend who had undertaken to see her home. Fortunately, the locked-out lady had a mother in London, whose knocker and bell had not been removed, and under that respectable wing She passed the rest of the night. But many were the conjectures 2s to who had taken the trouble to remove both the natural appendages to a street door. The husband suggested a festive medical student—as those gentlemen were once famous for their kocker explolts— but the friend had dark suspicions that some one much nearer home had an inclination to stop the lady’s returning for good, and all by getting her undentably compromised.
