THE TAX SALES commenced this morning at the office of Col- lector Cook at 11 o'ctock, previous to which time the Collector and clerks in his office were kept quite busy recetving and receipting for delin- quent texes, in which cases a portion of the costs are saved to the delinquents. The attend- | ance of bidders was rather limited at the hour of opening, but quite a lively interest was taken later in the day. Mr. Thomas Dowling ts the auctioneer this year, and commenced the sales from the letter “A,” and will proceed through | the entire alphabet. It ts the intentfon of the Collector to procecd slowly with these sales this year, In order to give delinquents who are hard pressed for money opportunity to come up and settle before their property is reached oa the catalogue, thus saving the sale percentage. The interest allowed (10 per cent) on the money 1a- vested by speculators in these tax sales is quite an inducement for competltion for eligibly situ- ated lots of ground. Offernbach’s new opera bouffe, La Fille du ambour Major, was performed ‘last night at ra’s Opera House by Mr. Grau’s new French opera company, and both the plece and the mpany made a fine tmpression. ‘The new opera will never prove the popular hit of the Grand Duchess, but the music throughout fs of a higher order than in that most successful of Offenbach’s compositions, and the construction of the piece, while wanting in the grotesque burlesque of the Grand Duchess, presents characters of much more flnisu—as for fnstance, that of the Due Della Volta, admirably delin- eated by M. Vilano, and the title role, the bluff old drum major, performed with the requisite dash and viger by M. Vinchon, The company is, On the whole, better than Mr, Grau’s organi- zation of last year, though the latter embraced such artists as Marie, Capoul, Duplan and the beautiful Angele. ‘The new prima, Mary Albert, has both beauty and a fair volce, and Cecile Gregorie, who has already appeared in Washington, is’ acceptable in both these re- quirements.’ ‘The female chorus, as usual in French opera in the United States, seems t> have been selected for ugliness to act as foils for the leading women. The orchestra last Lighy was good, and the opera was put upon the Btage very handsomely. The closing scen, With the entry of the victorious French troops, Was particularly effective. The new opera wiil undcubtedly grow in favor nightly, and the Pepular airs in it will soon be whistled upoo Ube streets and thrummed upon the plano. HERRMANN AT THE NATIONAI.—Since the ver- satile Heller departed this lifé, the Mephisto- philean Herrmann is without a rival in the Magic art. Many of his feats last night were new and staruing. His cabinet and giass box mystery, without any putting out of itgnts, is more wonderful than the so-called spiritual Manifestations, and decidedly more amusing. Many of bis minor tricks are as beautiful as they are wonderful—such as those of the taree white pigeons, the white rabbits, etc. The grotesque dancing of the Onofris brothers and the Lorgllos appropriately supplements the dia- blerie of Herrmann, and is a pleasant interlude. The same may be sald of Val Vose, the ven- triloquist, and his funny people. Altogether, the entertainment fs a drawingone.
