THE EVED AR. WASHINGTON. TUESDAY......... September 28, 188C. fhe Evening Star has @ regular, perma- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper Published tn Washington, and equal totha Of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. ‘THe S742 office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by maii and otherwise, news, or any information Or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. The Dissolving Greenbackers. am of F. W. Hughes, “father of the la greenbackers,” as he 13 described, to Gen. Weaver, 1s about as personal as lan- guage could make It Mr. Hughes totimates unmistakably that, In his opinion, Weaver has sold out to the republicans. If the greenback presidential candidate deigved to reply to this Personal dispateh the fact has not been made public. These quarrels between former green back leacers prove conclusively the disintegra ton of that party. The present struggle be- tween the democratic and republican parttes is Aclose cue, and each fs striving to recruit its Yanks from the straggling and virtually dls- banded greenbackers. In any of the close states the greenbackers, though never strong enough toattain any power oor In local fest in fay or of elther = th old pa Which they choose to act. Ohio, Iadiana and Pennsyivania would all be democratic if the Greenbackers would vote that way, or over- Whelminsty republican ff the third party could be induced to vote that way. But they will divide th ves between the two old parties and no sort of calculation can show which will get the most of them. Consequently the close States are more doubtful than ever before. The late greenbacker who'decides to jotn the republ- jeans shouts with all bis might for Garfleldan1 thinks that his recent associate admirers of the Tag baby who have taken to democracy have sold Out. The democratic greenback recruit 1s fullot @nthusissm for Hancock and ts doub:ftul as to the honesty and sincerity of those who have Preferred Garfield. Weaver seems to have lost all influence even with the fragments and de- tachme that here and there endeavor to hold up the greenback banner. [His aivice as to Maine was listened to by but few, and now the leader of the few, nas retired and renonnced politics. Weaver, . has done more to disrupt the green- back party than the men who have been fizht- ing it. The belief that he ts making his can- didacy fer President subservient to personal ends and atms, is general among the voters who Were greenbackers, and It is probable that, ex- Cepting the fusion ticket in Matne, no electoral ticket even remotely connect with Weaver Will be voted on the 2d of next November. Can- didates of the greenback party for Congress and Other offices, In different states, are datly repu- dilating Weaver and declaring for either Garfleld or Hancock, and these are the only men wto Coula be expected or depended upon to see that the Weaver and Chambers ticket is ever shown &t the polls. After the October elections, Yided the result 1s such as to polnt pretty con- clusiveiy to the election of Hancock or Garfleld, the disintegration of the greenback party will Feceive a fresh Impetus. The greenback men Will generally make to the wiantng side with a Tusb. on the theory that it is utter folly to throw votes away. ————~e—____ ‘The naval demonstration tn front of Duleigno has been postponed, so it is now announced, forty-eight hours. This postponement 1s as- Cribed to the unexpected arrival of a French courier, bearing, it ts to be inferred, some direc- Uons from the government to.the French fleet. An English ccrrespondent telegraphs to his journal that “though France ‘may possibly not take part in the bombardment of the Turkish Positions, she will not withdraw her ships or disassociate herself, morally, from the enter- Prise.” The postponement of the naval demon- Stration, and the intimation that the French fleet will not engage in the extreme measure of & bombardment, is an indication that the pow- §rs, notwithstanding their warlike threats and Preparations, prefer to argue the question Still further rather than bring on a war, It bas been suspected for some time that the great naval demonstration was in the Dature of a bluff, the powers believing that the Sulten could be overawed without the use of actual force. The Sultan, on the contrary, is More defiant than ever, and the Porte has noti- fied Montenegro that an advance upon Dulcigno ‘Will be regarded asa declaration of war. Ad- Iiral Seymour, commanding the allied feet, has learned thatif the bombardment ts deter. Mined upon the powers must furnish land troops for the Sighting that will follow, as well &3 naval vessels. The Prince of Montenegro declares that he cannot maintain himself, it War is once begun, unless the powers send him troops. It begins to look as if there will be at least another effort made to settle this question Without war. It ts plain that the powers donot Want war ifitcan possibly be avoided. They Cannot tell where the fighting would stop if tt is once begun. <r ____ The superintendent of education of South Carolina reports that the average attendance at the public schools, in that state, for the past three years, has been 52,977 white and 60,722 Colored puplis against an average attendance during the preceding eight years of 33,752 white and 41,691 colored puptts; that 3,166 teachers are now employed to only 1,593 tn svi. Hesays year $520,000 will be spent upon the © schools, and that next year the school term will be lengthened; that the democratic State administration found the pubile schools in debt, and that has had to be pald off. These figures show that there are still large numbers Of the colored youth who are not attending the Schools, but the increase in attendance, during the last few years ts gratifying. Of the whites there are thousands in the state, no doubt, who are being educated at thelr parents’ expense. but the colored ehlidren have no resource but the public sehcols. ——_—__--____ ‘The parade of the bustuess men at the open- ing of the National Fair will, from present ap- ances, be 4 creditable one. The organiza- ton of the parade ts in the hands of energetic Practical men who will leave nothing undone to ensure success. In every way it is desirable that there should be a general representation of Our business people tn this parade. It is worth While to show that ft ts not necessary to go ont- side of Washington to make purchases, or to Secure good work of any kind. Again, it ts de- Sirable to give this support to the National Fatr €nterprise, which ts doing so much for the ben- efit or the city by bringing large mumbers of Feopie here, who in turn become customers of our business houses. ———~--—____ The fhanufacture of oleomargarine continues to be a profitable business tn this country de- spite the rigid laws that have been enacted tn regard to it. The president of the New York Produce exchange informs the Secretary of the United States Treasury that very imperfect and incomplete statistics of the quantity of butter exported from this country are now ob tained because of the large proportion of oleo- Inargarine being cleared as butter. He appeals to Secretary Sherman to give such instructions a8 will require oleomargarine to be cleared “other than as butter.” The enactment ofa law by the different states re uiring oleomar- Garine to be stamped and branded as Such has riven eleomargarine to foreign markets. Ba. Cause of the cheapness of the materials enter. ing into oleomargarine in this cou. oan bo made, shipped to Europe and there sold at Profit at figures below those paid for butter. Everything goes to show thatthe makers of Oleomargarine have thriven, aud while the stuff continues to sell well abroad its manutac- ture will be continued. ————~+ee-_____ Prices continue to run low in the New York Stock market and there are various theories ag to the cause. There is no particular reason for Guiness or depression and the supposition is tuat the operators think it a good time to lower Prices for speculative purposes. To this end the political situation is worked for all it ds Worth, and the western raflroad entanglement 43 mace to do duty in the same ling, 1 880 THE FALL CAMPAIGN OF A.
