Herald THE BURIAL OF OLE BULL took place August 24, trom bis residence on Lyroen, the “Isle of Light,” a rock in tie inlet Of the Bergentjord. rising a huncred feet above the sea, and cov- «red with dense woods of spruce, fr, and birch. Early In the morning the comin was brought down from the house. on board the steamer Kong Sverre, and when the Kong Sverre turned round the southern potnt of the ‘island it was eae by fourteen other steamers, falling [a ive behind it. Thus the procession moved toward the city of Bergen, at the head of the 1jord, saluted from the fortress and the men-of- War tn the harbor. From the wi:att to the cem- etery the coffin was carried through streets decorated with wreaths and flacs and thronged by people clad in mourning. For Ole Bull was something more than a virtuoso. He was a character {a the history of Norway, a power in the national ilie of the country. When he first appeared on the stage all Europe was ringing with the pratse of Paganin Nevertheless, after the layse of a few years, Ole Ball was generally acknowledged the greatest violinist ever heard. Not only bistechnical skill seemed @ marvel to people of that time but he brought along with him a new melody which touched everybody’s heart, a new impression which ternpted every body’s curiosity, and when he was asked, “what do you mean with this sweet little air working itself out of ail this distarmontous confusion?” he would answer: It is my coun- try I paint; it Is Norway,” and the explanation eYew as eloquent on his lips as on the strings of his violin. What Franklin was to Amer- ica—the first who told the world that this country grows its own characters asit grows lis own fron'and its own grapes; such Ole Bull was to Norway—the first who showed the world that this young people, which only in 1S41 took its place among independent nations, had a heart of itsown and a mind of itsown. Pa- triotism was his great passion. All the honors he earned in the world he sent consclentiousiy home. He forgave people when they sald that he could not play the violin, but he never for- faye them when they doubted that Norway ad the stuff within herself to become a great country. His patriotism was fanatic, and fanaticism offen gave rise to very queer freaks. But bis countrymen who reaped the benefits of allhe did and all ne said, understood him, and the country in mourning at his burial is a sim- oor uatural expression of gratitude.—y. » Times, _TWO OF THE OHIO STRIEING MINERS No trouble occurred at Corning, Ohio, Gay; but a party of miners cameto Mine No. 3 and asked permission to search the woods for a dead man, who, they alleged, had been killed Guring the charge of Sunday.
