THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON.- WEDNESDAY... September 22, LSSC. CROSBY Ss. NOY Editors —————————— The Evening Star has@ regular, yerma~ nent. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily payer published tn Washington, and equal totha Of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. ‘Tue Bran office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information Or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. The Fight m Ohio. itis plain now that the democrats are In earnest In their attempt to carry Ohio at the coming election. They have organized ia every county, and the national comnittee are providing speakers and money to pus forward the canvass. The republicans profess to feel confident of thetr hold upon the state, bat tats talk is on a par with that of the democrats about Indiana. The republican m%jo: Ohio, in proportion to the whole vi State, fs feo small to warrant any great degree Of confidence in the result. The demorrars are especially active in Cincinnat! and Hamilton county, and, it is sald, that as goes that county, so goes the state. A number of leading democrats, including Senator Pendleton. W, Groesbeck end Judge Hoadiey, have voluntarily contributed ach to make up a fuad tobe used for carrying the two Cinciunati coa- gressional districts. At the election tn 1s7s, Butterworth (rep.) only got 720 votes more than Sayler (dem.), out of a total vote of 25,320. Young (rep.) carried the second district by a plurality of 974 out of a total vote of 25,389. This year the democrats are better organized, and ft 1s claimed that they have nominated stronger men than in 1s73. Hunt and Banning, the democratic nominees, are both rich and that counts for a great deal in a congres. sional canvass, especially ina large city. The s have renominated the sitting mem- ey expect to increase thelr vote of Both members have made records satisfactory to thelr party; Dit, a3 the figures show, the Might is close and doubtful. In the pr J election of 1876 the republi- can major! while the plurality of over Ti Hayes 16 out of a total vote of 654 ‘The next election occurre ; for governor. The total vote cast was falling off of 1 from the yi this election the nationals cast 16 Bishop (dem) got a plurality of ) over his Tepubl cn competitor, West. As compared with srepublican vote for governor in 1S77 fell 53, while the democratic vote declined 51,557, a difference that more than cov- ered the democratic pluraltty. The repubiteans became dissatisfied with a speech delivered by their candidate early In the canvass, and thou - sands of t refused £9 go to the polls. It was alleged that the speech was tainted with com- munism, wileh was obnoxious to the conserva- tive people of Ohio, In the gubernatorial €lection of 1579 the total vote was Increased to the largest ever cast. Both parties made @ thoroush canvass, and, 1 Is presumed, brought out all their votes. Foster (r elected over Ewing (dem.) by a pinrality of 17,129, the nationals casting 9,072 votes for their candidate, Piatt. The republicans also carried the legislature, which they had lost In 1877, bs @ majority on jotnt ballot of 31, and elected Gen. Garfield United States senator to succeed Mr. Thurman. It ts the vote of 1879 upon whic the republicans base thelr calculations of sue cess this year. As thelr majority over all, last Year, was only 3,353, the republicans cannot count upon certain victory, but all the chances are in their favor. They have a citizen of their State at the head of the national ticket, and the party ts better organized than ever before. Hence the general expectation 1s that the re- Publicans will hold the state by a majority fully 6 large as last year. = West Virginia hoids a state election on the 12th of Octover and the republicans are making an effort to wrest the state from the democrats. In 18i6 the state gave Tilden a majority of 12, in a total yote of 100,526, That year the greenback vote was only 1,373 in the state. In the congressional elections of 1573 the total Yote decreased to 94,907 and the greenback vote increased to 24.531. A pertion of this increase, however, was due to the fact that in the third district the republicans supported the green- back candidate. The combined republican and Greenback vote, In 1S7s, was 41,566, while, in 1St6, the republican yote cast for Hayes was 69S. The total democratic vote cast for Con- gressmen in 1S7S was 50,318 and there were Scattering votes, leaving a clear democratic Majority over all of 5,729. The last legislature elected stands, democrats 61, republicans 10, greenbackers 1%. The greenback idea took a Pepular hold in West Virginia a year or two ago, but a= the election figures here given show, the new party derived !ts strength mainly trom the republicans. In isi3 the democratic vote fell off tre 455 in 1576 to 50,318, a decline of 6,137 votes, while the republicans and green. backers combined cast only 44,566 votes (in 1S75 against 44,071 for both those minority parties in isié. There have been strenuous attempts made to bring about a fusion of republicans and SreeLbackers for this canvass, but they have Bot been attended with success. It ts under- Stocd that the two parties are working together in some parts of the state, but the indications are that the greenbackers of two years ago have largely urned tg their former political afftiia tons and that the vote of that party will be Ugbt. There is no good reason to doubt that the democrats will carry the state. The democrats are having trouble their stronghold of Missouri. They nave two cand:- dates for Congress in the eighth district, and tn two other districts tae repubiteans and green- backers have united in opposition to the rega- lar democratic nominee. In St. Louls some of the party leaders have charged other well- known democratic managers with bribery and Corruption at a primary election, and ugly facts Were testified to beforea notary. There i3 a muddle in the second congresstonal distri over a candiiate yet to be named. Mr. Pulltzer, editor of the St. Louls Pust-Dispateh, wants the nomination, but the St. Louis Re Influential democratic journal, intimates very Plainly that {t will not support him, if*he does get the nomination. A number of dew’ held an ind! on meeting the other night and adopted resolutions denouncing the central committee of the party for alleged usurpations, With allt internal quarrels on hand, it 1s Not likely that the democratic majority in the state will be less than 59,000 or 60,000, but the Tepublicans mnay win baek the city of St. Louls, Where the democratic majority 13 not large. —_—___~--_______ The straight-out greenbackers, headed by Solon Chase, bolted from the Matne greenback State convention yesterday after the adoption Of a resolution to continue the fusion with democrats. Gen. Weaver, no doubt, fears tnat @ fusion electoral Ucket means a campaign for Hancock, and he does not care to be thus ob- secured. He sent his agents tothe convention to oppose fusion, and, falling, they have dis- Tupted the party. The fustonist electoral ticket allots a majority of electors to the greenbackers, or four greenbackers to three democrats, but It is alleged by the stralght-out greenbackera that the understanding is amongst the fustonists that their whole electoral vote shall be given to Hancock if he needs it. It is not Probable that the Chase electoral ticket will get a very large vote, but in the close contest there It will Rot require avery large defection from the fu- sion ranks to give the state to Garfleld. prrmmers SUPPLIES FOR GAS FITTERS AND PLUMBERS.
