Why, it Htted me right on my feet! 1 tell you, you're a born orator, and 1 just wish I could stay in this town and’ hear you make a speech every night.” “Yes, T wish you could.” —~ - “But Ican’t. Iam on my way west. I shall, however, think of your speech a hundred times ada 1 can feel the electricity of it yet, and— Say, can’t you lend me half a dollar to help me on?” “Why, I don’t «now you. Why should I lend you haifa dolias?”” “Oh, come now—don't try to ride any high herse over me. You know how loud I hollered, and you know as wellas I do thatif J hadn't put In my best licks you’d have fallen a3 flat as a shingle! You are a great orator, sir, and that Was a great speech, but if you don’t know that hollering 1s what does the ‘business, you’d bet- ter hang right up.” Tue orator pondered over the matter for a few seconds, aud then probably concluded that the reasoning was sound, as he passed over the moni : JcpGEs WHO INTERRUPT.—Judicial thinking aloud 1s one of the vices of our modern judicial system. ‘The vigorous reporter who presen's almost verbatim tn the columns of the Ties the doings of the court of appeal at Westmins- ter, shows Very clearly to What arguments in courts of law have been reduced. “A running fire of questions from three astute judges 1s Rot an ordeal through which any counsel ought to be expected to pass fn advocating a cllent’s cause, and we think that the judges of half a century ago would open their eyes with amaze- ment if they could peruse a faithful report of Proceedings in any of our courts of law. The minority of judges In the present day have the faculty of listening. The majority utter their thoughts and thelr criticisms freely as they go alorg. The consequence must be that argu- ments become inflated without any compensa. Ung advantage. The only consolation 1s that the evil cannot increase in magnitude.—Lo.ton Law Times. ———____9 James Murphy, a farmer, near east New York, L,I, betng greatly annoyed by boys Stealing apples from his orchard, lay in wait on Sunday last for fer uato , armed with a loaded gun.
