THE EVENING STAR. « WASHINGTON. THURSDAY -August 19, 1SS0- _———— eee CROSRY & NOYES....Editor, _ so —— Zhe Evening Star has@ regular. perma- ment. tona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal totha Of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. SS ‘THE BTAR has a direct wire from ts news room to the Western Union Telewraph office in New York eity, from which wires radiate to al! parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest ews by its own operator from every quarter up to ‘within a few moments of going to press. It is the only eveninw paper south of Philadelphia which re elves exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. ‘Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- mer travelers, can have TH@ Stan mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the sddrees being changed se often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. be Way the Trees are Going. Persons who have taken the palns to maxe the calculation estimate that at the present rate of destruction the vast forests of this coun- try will have disappeared in forty years, leay- Ing the United States without timber. How to evonomise the forests Is the question being diz- cussed and different suggestions are made, but none of them are likely to be adopted or en- forced. One is, that the owners and operatives Of saw mills should lessen the quantity of lam- ber they are turning out; that because of the Present plentiful supply of timber, lumber can De sold at a very low price with fair proft and At ts “being rushed upon the market.” As long asthe profit can be realized it 1s nonsense to talk about curtailing the quantities of lumber being sawed. The men who have Invested in Saw Milis did so for profit, and they are not Golng to suspend operations because the next generation not be able te get iumber. 16 4s also suggested that the government turn {t’s to saving such of the public domain as is covered by Mne old tmber-producing for- ests. This land can be purchased now at $1.25 per a and this low price 1s one of the causes that makes cheap lumber, The men who purchase tis land for farming purposes generally fell the trees and burn them to clear the land. In this way mil- lions of splendid old forest trees that It required many years to develop are annually destroyed; ‘Dut what else can be done with them? The Pioneer who ventures out on the borders to establish 2 home fs, usually, too remote from market to sell his timber, and he would soon die of starvation should he leave the trees Standing. w for the time to come when he Would have factlities for transporting his timber to market. The tramigrants who are coming to our country by the thousands are ng land tocultivate. In order to ratse crops the timber must fall from the land. For the government to take all of Its timbered land from market for the benefit of future generations would be to check the extension of agriculture, from which ‘We derive most of our wealth. The only prac- tical way of meeting the difficulty of a future deficiency of timber seems to be the present Cultivation of new crops of trees. Such experi- ments as have been tried in the ralsing of trees best adapted to the purposes of lumber have been successful. Under cultivation they grow faster than when left entirely to nature, and a Crop of trees planted by one generation would Produce excelient lumber for the next. SS ee ‘The party managers on both sides are making reat efforts this presidential year to harmoatze Jocal differences and secure the nemination of the strongest possible tckets in the doubtful States. Thus in Connecticut a ticket was made up by the republicans harmonizing the bicker- ings between the rival citles of Hartford and New Haven, thus enabling the party to go into the contest this year much more hopefully than Zor the last eight years. The democrats of Con- Recticut have foliowed suit by nom!nating ex- Senatcr James English, of New Haven, for governor, and Charles M. Pond, of Hartford, for Heutenant governor. Mr. English has served two terms in the U.S. House of Representa- tives and two terms as governor of Connecticut, and on the death of Senator Ferry, in 1575, he Was appointed to fill the vacancy. He has Shown high characver and ability in public itze and in his own extensive business affilrs, and bis nomination ts a very strong bid for votes for in New Jersey yesterday the republicans lade a strong gubernstorial nomination in t! Person of Frank A. Potts, of the leading coal and tron house in the country, and whos great Popularity at home is shown by his eicction to the state senate In Is74 Ina county that Usually gives 2.000 democratic majority, and by bis coming within fifteen hundred of election for Congress In 1575 tn the fourth New Jersey district, that gave Tilden more than six thou- Sand majority. Gen. Kilpatrick wanted the nomination, but the republicans seemed to think he was hardly up to the mark for this contest. —-~<+e--___ It ig dificult to get rate reports from the fierce political battle now betpg waged in Indi- ana, because each party colorseversthing In its Own favor. The St. Louis Pos!-Dispatch, a dem- Ceratic paper, the editor of which, Mr. Pulitze is now stumping Indiana for the democracy, gives its judgment as follows: at the very best judgment would o be a doubtful state at this mo- average democrat n it assumes to bi tory, and the republican organs absolute when they do the same, for, after all, the Crats have better reasons to de confident. the truth is that no one can teli to-day how In- diana will go. and that success will go with that arty witch wili do the hardest and most eff. ive work between this and the 12th oi O2 ‘The editorial containing this expression of opinion was probably writtea by Mr. Palltze: himself, and is based upon his own observ. Uons. —_—_§_<o-_____. The report comes from England that the anticipated movement for the abolition of the House of Lords as at present constituted has been fairly started. A conference of ltberal electors and delegates representing Iberal asso- Ciations, described as crowded and eathusi- astic, was held last night at the Westminster Palace hot ndon, at which resolu’ions were passed denouncing the habitual obstruction of necessary reforms by the lords and squlrearchy in Parliament, demanding the aboll hereditary legisiators, and the substitution Senate on the American plan for the preseat House of Lords. It was decided to organize a meeting for an expression of public opinion curing the coming recess. With the slow course that any reform has to take in England, it wil; probably be the work of years to carry out this change in the organization of Parilament, but it is quite certain to come, and possibly in the Iife-thme of its present advocates. er It ts declared now that Candahar ts safe; that the Afghans are occasionally firing shells, but ~ little damage ts being done, and that the place has not been fully invested. The besiegers hhave some 12,000 men and greatly outnumber the garrison of 2.700 men, about half of whom are English; but the chances are that they wil not be able to reduce the place before relief wil Teach the fort, which will be due the last of September from the two columns now moving 40 Candabar from Cabul and Quettah. Th3 Garrison ts supplied with provisions until the Ast of October, Dut there ts danger that their Water supply will not hold out. ————__---—_____.
