The venerable Thurlow Weed has written a igs to the New York Heraid, in which he aining infidel opinions for the last ore YEATS, atid until the appearance of Robert G. Cler- gymen do not, as formerly, dwell and linger upon the dark features of theology. Nothing 18 now beard of the fate of “ infantis not a spab long.” The ministry of our day is a ministry of peace, charity and good will. This gene tion learns love and serve rather than t dread and rust our Creator and our viour. Whatever grounds existed formerly to tempt scoffers and revilers, the religion of our ed disarms and silences unprejudiced criti cism. Colonel Ingersoll, whom I do not know, has the reputation of being a gentieman of educa- With a weli-stored mind and attractive persenal Mapners, who speaks fluently and elo quentiy. Toe es the living oak, And yet infidelity insists that man, the image of his Creat Chderfully endowed and gitted, under whose auspices the world has been enlight oned, elevated and adorned, is after a brief existence to be as thcugh he had never been. Contrast the labors of Voltaire and Paine with those of John Wesley. Can it be said with truth that the former two made any one better or happier? Hundreds of thousands of the followers of Joun Wesley have lived and diea, and other hundreds and thousands survive, rejoicing tn their con- version from a sinful to a Christian life, Tue memory of Wesley 1s everywhere cherished by the good and the pure, while Voltaire and Patne are only remembered for the evil rather than for the good they did. RELIGION WORKING OUT If it be urged that the prom! vi have not ail been realized, that sin still abounds and that the world ts as bad as ever, it may be answered that religion is working outits mis- siop; that its benign intluneces are constantly extending, and that light is radiating the dark- est recesses of Leathenism and idolatry. It re quires no argument to demonstrate the fact that our race Is improved by civilization, or that civ- ilization owes its origin and progress to religion. To religious influences we are indebted for all the reforms which benefit society. Our Suaday schools were instituted in obedience toa divine command. In these schools children are taught, “without money and without price,” all that concerns their present welfare and their future bappiness, These intellectual nurseries have enriched and fertilized, and continue to enrich and fertilize every city, vill: hamlet and householdahroughout the Chi world. If religion bad done nothing more than to bless our race with the consecrating influences of eae Schools, scoffes should be shamed inio silence, Mr. Weed then goes on to relate in detatl what religion has done tor New York, speaking of the reclamation of the “Five Points” an other localities which were the homes of thou- sands of the vilest of the vile and are now under religh or moral training in New York, or bay d homes in the west, and continues the general subject as follows: INFIDELITY AND COMMUNISM. 1 ages found thelr strongest angu- Inst revealed religion upon what they iusprobable. And yet we are not called eve abything more incomprehensible ir own existence. We might with about of reason deny this fact as to refuse 10 believe Mm a futureexistence. We know that we live In this world. _Isit unreasonable to beHeve that we may live In another world? It we are to believe nothing but what we under- stand we should go through lfe incredulous and aimless. We are ready enough to believe on information the things t that relate to this world; but we are slow to believe in prophecy and revelation, though both are corroborated by observation, experience and events. Infi- delity, claiming superiority in “reason” and commen sense, asks us to believe that of grandeur and’ sublimity, all of vastness and power in the beautiful heavens and upon the bountiful earth comes by chance; that eversthing 1s self-creating and self-existing, and that law, order and harmony are accidents, Those who aot this theory would find Its ap- plication to their business affairs anything but advantageous, Infidelity and communism are kindred in character, and aim, by different methods, to underminé the sanctions and se- curities upon which the world’s welfare and happiness rest. Infidelity strikes at religion, communism at property. One seeks to weaken our faith and the other demane's for the fdie and worthless an equal share in the savings of the industrious and frugal. Aj {ism (com- munism of a railder type) came to us some forty years ago from England, with Fapny Wright and Robert Dale Owen as its apostles. This bad element has been reinforced by communtsin from France and Germany. All three are work- jug out their destructive mission i a city ére, unhappily, they find co-operation and sympathy. DANGEROUS, BECAUSE INTELLIGENT. To these birds of ili omen comes infidelity equally aggressive, with Robert G. Ingersoll as its teacher. If it be said that, unlike the com- isa “gentleman andascholar,” the danger is thereby fatens!- fied. The wonder is why 2 man of char- acter and associations should take pleasure in teachings whose practical effect is to make his hearers and readers worse Instead of better citizens. The strongest gt keg ‘urged against Christianity, from the days of Voltaire and Paine, !s Ulat bad men make a profession of it that hypocrites are found in all our churches. This 1s true. But is it not equally true that everything intrinsically valuable tS de- based? Frauds are practiced in business. The richest fabrics have their imitations, Gold and silver coins are debased or counterfeited. The evils, however, aed from impositions of this nature are not serl- ous, The intelligence of our people and the peualties to which offenders are subjected afford adequate protection, and for one hypocrite who makes a false profession there are at least nine conscientious, devoted Christians. Another et against religion 1s that our Saviour an impostor, and that, as a corollery, his Teachings exert & baneful influence. And yet both of the accusations are aisproved by the rience Of 2,000 years. if Jesus sot Nazareth ad been an impostor His name and everythin: connected with it would hardly have survived a second generation. There would then have been no occasion for the labors of Voltaire, Paine or Ingersoll.
