THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. MONDAY ............... August 9, 19SCe CROSRY 8. NOYES....Editor. The Evening Star hasa@ regular, perma” nent. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal totha of all the other daily papers Rere added to- gether. ‘Tue STAR has 8 direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telewraph office in New York eity, from which wires radiste to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest news by its own operator from every quarter up to within a few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philsdelphis which re celves exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- mer travelers, can have Tae Stap mailed to them, Postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the addrees being changed a8 often as desired. The money meet ececmpany the order in all cases. Elsewhere will be found an abstract of Gen. McDonald's “exposure” of the whisky ring, in which he makes a vindictive assault upon Gen. Grant. It 1s probable that the design was to use the book as a campaign document had Grant been nominated, but that it became worthless for that use when another man was nominated and that McDonald publishes It now to make seme money by Its sale, The amount of new matter tn it, however, aside from McDon- id's unsupported statements, does not seem of sufficient weight to make any great demand for the book likely. The pubiication seems to show that members of the whisky ring were on a rather unpleasantly familar footing at the White House; but the friends of Gen. Grant contend, and probably with truth, that he had no personal knowledge of the operatious of the ring, though the same 1d of some of the members of Lis Cfficial househol McDonald, It is sald, won Grant’s regard by his pluck and energy at Vicksburg, and It was the liking and confidence thus inspired that gave him a footing after- t the White House. It would seem, as in some other tnstances tn Grant ’s presidential career, to have been a case of sadly misplaced confidence. ———— re Mr. Blatne has thrown himself into the con- test in Maine with characteristic energy, and the republicans throughout the country seem to take it for granted that when be undertakes the active management of the campaign the State ts safe forthem. Those familiar, however, With Maine politics see that he has, by long odds, the heaviest fight on hand this year he bas ever sustained. The coalition between the Cemocrats and creenbackers Is very thoroughly Organized, It is not certain that the counting out frauds of the fustonists will lose them many votes, and the republicans have to count upon a considerable defection from their ranks to the radical temperance ticket. The republicans have always been t greatest sufferers when the temperance men have had a separate ticket in the fleld. This the ramrod Neal-Dow temperance people threaten not only to put up an electoral ticket, tut to ru separate candidates for governor and In the first Congressional dls- ance, the democrats and green- ‘vackers have united on Gen. Anderson, the democratic candidate two years ago, and at the same time the temperance people will, it is re- Ported, put up an independent candidate, a prominent republican politician of York county, who willbe apt to draw away many votes from the regular republican nominee. When It is considered that Keed, republican, was elected two years ago only by a plurality over the democratic and greenback candidates,—the vote Standing: Reed, 13.483; Anderson, democrat, 9,333; Gore, greenbacker, 6,348,—and that the democrats and greenbackers are united this year on Anderson, it will be seen that the republicans have a pretty tough job on hand to held the district, even without the drawback of a ramrod republican independent cand!date tn the field. Something like the same condition of affairs exists in the 2d (Frye’s) district, where Frye two years ago received 11,434 votes, against Chase, greenbacker, and 3,332 for Belcher, dem- ccrat. Frye is very popular, however, and the tusionist frauds were so especially distasteful to some of the large towns counted out in his district that he will doubtless pull throvgu against all odds, In the Sd district, Lindsey, republican, was elected also by a plurality vote, receiving to §, for Philbrick, greenbacker, and 5, for Smith, democrat. In the 4thand sth dis- triets the democrats and greenbackers elected Lada and Murch over the republican candidates. Powers and Hale. It will thus be seen that the republi-ans, even with Mr. Blatne’s perzonal supervisal uf the de. tails of the campaign, and the aid of ‘he presi- dential question to bring out their disa‘Tected members, will have a pretty hard fight in the Congressional districts against the fusion. though they may be able to carry the electoral Uicket and the legislature. The rapid extension of telegraph facilities to meet the increasing demands of business has enveloped all our large cities in a maze of wires and fled the streets with unsightly poles. New York, Boston, Chicago and Cincinnati are pro- testing against the present system of erecting wires, and the Western Union Company 13 lay- fog an experimental wire under grouad tn Jer- sey Ct, the purpose of devistag a plan for running {ts various lines that will not {n- commode and endanger the residents of cities ‘The danger of the present system of running wires was upon the perple of Cal. cago lately. While flames were Issuing from the sixth story of a hotel tae cry was ralsed that some of the inmates were atill in the upper Tooms of the burning bullding. The fire- men found { tmpossible to ran up ladders because of the telegraph wires which surrounded the hotel on every side. Wires by the score extend over the roofs of houses here in Washington as well as other cities, and they not only, often in cases of fire, interfere with the work of the firemen, but actually endanger thelr ves. It ts time for municip: horities to take a det rand against the present mode of erecting wires. It ts not nece that the telegraph compantes should await the result of experiments with un- derground w! t has been demonstrated long ago that the underground system can be made as effictent as the one now in use. In Lon- don, for lustance, the wires are all encased in boxes that are sunk along the curbing. This plan ts more expensive than the use of poles, because the wires have to be coated with an tn- sulator; but {t 1s time, in this country, to con- sult public convenlence and safety rather than the de and expenses of telegraph compa- panies. Here In Washington the removal of the long lines of poles on our thoroughtares would rid us of a nuisance and add to the general ap- pearance of the city. —__—_—-—_____ ‘The history of the struggle for woman's suf- frage tn this free country and the part that the Smith sisters, of Glastonbury, Vt, and their cows have played tn it are familiar to all who read. Year after year those cows were per mitted to beso’d by the collector, as the pro- test of the sisters against taxation without representa‘ion. The elder sister died a year or two ago, and committed to the survivor, Miss Julta, the cause for which they had battled. Miss Julia married and, after resisting the des- potism of men for three score years, she has finally surrendered to the authority of one man—her husband. Recently he patd the tax on the cows, without making any fus3 about 1", and when bis wife mildly protested he sald to her, “it was bis tax, not hers, and as he cou!d yote he had no reason to go contrary to law.” Miss Smith, or rather Mrs. Parker, recognizes the authority of her husband, and meekiy hopes that “the town will vote In a more elvii collector next fali.” Rae ACEE TO a from Cong Aqueduct bridge between 5 and 7" o days and Saturdays.
