CALIFORNIA'S LAST TRAGEDY, An Excitement Equal to That of the Crittenden-Fair Marder. THE S9N-IN-LAW OF A NOTED UNITARIAN PREACE- BR KILLS A POPULAR DENTIST. Eight years ago the people of San Francisco had the skating fever. “The Pavillion,” a well- known piace of amusement, was turned into a rink, and became the fashionable resort of the city. Miss Minnie Stebbins, a pretty girl of 16, Spent muchof her time there. She was te daughter of the Rev. Dr. Horatio Stebbins, a distinguished Unitarian preacher, who, tn 1564, succeeded the celebrated Starr King fn the pas- torate of the leading Unitarian church of San Francisco. The ticket seller of the rink was a youDg man about 2 years of age, handsome and of winning manners. Miss Stebbins began to linger at the window of the ticket box, and {t was not long before the acquaintanceship ri- pened into friendship, and the friendship into love. The ticket seller, Schroeder, was invited by bis sweetheart to call on her at her father’s house. The cails became so frequeat that Dr. Stebbins had a sertous talk with his daughter. He told her that she was too young to think of marriage; that the ticket seller of a skating ink Was hardly a desirable husband, and so ou. Schrceder ceased coming to the hose. T young lady seemed convinced and obedt: but the lovemaking went on. The girl selzed every opportunity to steal ent away trem Lome and meet her lover. Finally, despa of breaking off In any otter intimacy of which he disapproved, and beltev- ing in the maxim, ‘Far from the eyes, far from the heart,” the clergyman resolved to send his ¢ cr abroad. This resolution, however, only bastened the catastrophe. The girl lent herself to the preparations for the journey. On the day previous fo that fixed for her departure, June 5, 1572, she managed to obtain leave to io across the bay in order to bid some intimate friends adieu.” She met Schroeder, no longer a 1 but an employe in ‘the London neisco bank, and a minister at : man and wife. Schrocder returned to he : alone and tranquil. On June an aunt, she lett San Francisc whence’ she was to sall for pe. hews of the marriage quickly reached her father’s ears, He was very angry. But finally he recalled his daughter, bies her and handed her over to her lawful husband. Later he gave them money, and called them his beloved chil- Gren. Mr. did Mrs. Schroeder Ilved happily for eight years. One child was born to them, a lovely girl. ‘They dwelt in a pretty cottage ‘at Oaklacd, a fashionable suburb of San Francisco. Mrs. Schroeder's teeth presently began to give her trouble, and7Dr. Alfred Lefevre, the leading dentist of Oaklaud, was employed to attend to them. His rooms were datly crowded with pa- Uents, many of them ladies of the highest re- Spectabllity, Although originally from Can- ada Dr. Lefevre had lived in the town 17 years. Me was a married man, with four chiidren. Every one spoke of bimin the highest terms, both’ as a gentleman and a dentist. Mrs. Schroeder called upon Dr. Lefevre several Umes. On July 26th, according to trst reports of the crime as published in the San Francisco newspapers, Mrs. Schroeder went with her child to meet her husband, who was returning home frets San Fras 00, abd told him that on the previous Saturday afternoon (July 21th), While she Was under the tufluence of ai thetic, Dr. Lefevre had assaulted her, § der, taking lis wife and little daughte him went straight to the docior’s oftice The dentist Was at the moment oper: upon the teeth of a Miss Keeny, the young lady's mother and Miss Mary Agnéw Lefevre’s assistant, belng present. The room isa small one. betWeen a large front room and a smaller back room, all the rooms having doors opening into the ballway. The denust was returning from the back room, when the door opened, and Schroeder, followed by his wife and child) rushed in. Schroeder was holding a bulldog elf-cocking pistol in his hand. He tn p= «tately fired twice upon the dentist. Not a ord was spoken between the two men. The iirst bal ruck Lefevre in the left side, below the heart. It rang: downward, passed through the intestines, and lodged under the skin just above the hip bone. The second shot ‘azed the doctor's ear as he staggered back- Ward. ‘The two shots and the screams of the wo brought several persons rushing up into the ofice, which fs in one of the ublic places of Oakland. J. L. Broomley who an oflice next door, was among the first to arrive on the spot. He assisted Lefevre toa sofa in the adjoining room. The blood rusbed {n torrents from the wound, and Le- fevre knew that he had only a few minutes to live. With a taint voice he dictated the follow- ing declaration: i, Alfred Lefevre, knowing that I am about to die, declare, in the presence of God and these witnesses, that 1 was Killed by a pistol shot fired at me by E.S. Schroeder, without any provocation. ‘The shooting occurred at 5 o'clock In the af- ternoon, An hour later Lefevre was dead. Schroeder seems to have been ;cool and collect- ed throughout. After he saw the man fall he hanced tue pistol to one of the bystanders, and gravely said: * Citizens do your duty. I am re- Sponsible for this act.” He was arrested soon d taken to the city prison, his wife and him. “On the ‘way he is re- hope to God I have killed him. IfJ havn't Iwill. A man cannot seduce my wife and | e Oakland has sedom known such an excite- nent, The young people sympathized with Schroeder; the older citizens sald: “ This thing aman down in cold blood, for either cled grievances, must stop.” The Precarious condition of Mrs. Lefevre, who had just undergone an operation for eancer, and whose chances of recovery have been sensibly lessened by the shock, has gone far to stir up feeling against Schroeder. “The statement of the dentist's assistants, who emphatically deny the possibility of the assault, since it was their duty to be present whenever chloroform or cas Was administered, aiso have welght. Fer Schroeder seems to have thoroughly believed his wife's story, whether true or false. She also seems to be thoroughly sincere in it. The Suggestion has been made that it is a case of hallucination, the effect of the chloroform. Such cases are not unknown to medical men or the courts, Later evidence modifies in an important point the first suppositions as to the motives of the crime as given by the newspapers. At the ex- amunauion of Schroeder, July 29, the Rev. Dr. Stebbins testified thaton July 12 his daughter confessed to him and her husband that Fefevre had betrayed her; that he and his son-ia-law soon afterward visited the dentist, and he taxed him with the crime; that Lefevre neither at- firmed nor dented the charge, but was much ex- cited, and trembled visibly. Dr. Stebbins em- phatically added that he regretted not having been armed at the time; if he had had a pistol. he sald, he would then ad there have killed the Seducer, and saved his son-in-law this trial. He further testified Ubat since June 12 Schroeder had actcd as though out of his mind. He him- Self bad accompanied his son-in-law on a trip through the country to divert hts mind from the affair, but without success, as the tragedy of July 26 proved. The testimony would seem to indicate that the first reports as to an outrage having been committed were not well founded. Notwithstanding the efforts of Rey. Dr. Steb- bins and other irie Schroeder was on Tues- day committed for trial without ball. His coua- sel gave notlce of au application to the superior court for a writ of habeas corpus. The San Francisco Chronicle says Uhat all the medical men who expressed themselves on the subject scoffed at the idea of outrage by means of chloroform, as reported. Some of them stated in addition some Interesting facts bear- ing on the present case. Dr. Seifredge said that it was hot at all uncommon for lady patients under the intiuence of chteroform to have very powerful hallucinations of @ peculiar nature, and to act in @ manner totally’ different from. their ordinary decorum. Dr. Luce, a dentist, sald that he once, in Titusville, Pa., adminis: tered chloroform to a woman whose husbaud assisted him and was present all through the operation. The next day the man called at bis ofice and laughingly stated that he could Bot remove the impression from his aling him that nothing impro, had occurred.
