The readjuster electoral ticket will, In all probablil- ty, continue tn the field, as the talk of compro- mise and withdrawal has about subsided. A umber of the readjuster leaders have openly proclaimed themselves for the regular Hancock ticket, and are, in fact canvassing tn {ts behalf, but the most skillful managers and hardest, Workers of that party still adhere to thelr Cause. The calculation of the republic ums is that with two democratic tickets in the Held the vote of that party may be so dik to give the Garfield electors a plu- is Dell to be really be S and repubttcans, as the calculations to the readjusters must leave them In the minority, counting the BuMmerous desertions from their party. It will require the full vote of the repubiteans to give thelr ticket any show of suc and now the question arises may not the continuance of the Teadjuster ticket In the race draw votes from tie republicans? This 13 3 question that does not appear to have met with much considera- ton. The success of the readjusters in the last state e due to the support they got from the republicans. The readjuster s, from Gen. Mahone down, have done est to retain this support. They divided ‘S upon a very fair basis with their colged allie fight for their lectoral tick @ readjusters count upon the Support of a large proportion of colored voters, Nearly every vote they get from this element of the population will be a vote drawn from the republican ticket. The leaders of the regu- lar republican organization in Virginia refused once to unite with the readjusters, and when it almost certain that a victory could bewon. Therefore {t 1s not at all likely that *h coalition could be formed now, when it would bring upon tke republican party In its national contest the odlum of afillation with repudiationists. Indeed there are no signs that Aby such coalition has been, or will be, pro- posed, but we point out the tmprobebllity of it as showing the prospect of a continuance of the three-cornered fight now being waged. Virginia politics are in a mixed and uncertain state; but view the situation from any side, the advantage appears to be with the regular democrats. <o——______ At xeon to-morrow Dr. Tanner will have Completed his forty days fast, so-called. That he kas dented himself proper nourishment since he entered upon bis task Is very plain, but there Will always be grave doubts as to his having entirely done without food of some kind. The Watch upon him has not been very strict, and it would not have been a difficult matter to Smhuggle some highly concentrated preparation of food into his possession. What good purpose the man expects to accomplish by his self-in- filcted suffering, is past comprehension. Even supposing that his fast has been unbroken all these days, how can the evidence of his ability to do without food benefit anything or any- body? It does not teach other persons how to lve without food. Sclence gets no new ight from the experiment. Though Tanner's period Of starvation fs so near an end, the result of his €xperiment is not yet apparent. He may find It More cifficult now to get his stomach to re- tain nourishment than it was to do without it. He has violated the laws of nature, and may pay the penalty with his life. — ‘The democratic state committee of New York Which met yester adjourned over until to- day, after adopting a resolution in favor of har- mony in the party, but, in fact, doiag nothing to bring that about. Ir looks now as ff the question of a union of Tammany and aatl-Tam- many Is to be speedily settled. Tammany de mands that a state convention shall be called for the nomination of a candidate for chief jus- Uce of the court of appeals, and that all factions of the party shall be reeognized and admitted to Fartictpation tn such convention. The state committee is composed almost unanimously ot bitter foes of Tammany, and is not, therefore, likely to accede to the demand of the latter. The Sentiment of the committee seems to be against aconvention, the members holding that they (the committee) are competent to select a candidate. As this plan would prevent any chance of the recognition of Tammany, ft Will probably be ad spted, unless the in- fluence of leading democrats, who want harmony, proves strong enough to overcome the sentiment of the committee. The ant- ‘Tammanyites are afraid of a convention. The demand for a reorganization of the party ma- chinery in the state ts so general that the Til- denites, who hold the present co:amtttee, doubt their ability to retain their power should a state convention be called. The Star, Tammany organ, in calling for a convention shows its teeth after Unls fashion: “‘It_will not do to count upon the popuiarity €f Gen. Hancock to pull the ticket through in spite of stupidity and mismanagement at the headquarters of the state contrat committ We must not undertake any avotdabie risks; and, Lesides the presidential ticket, we have Congressmen to elect and the assembly to tween t most favo rescue i1¢m republican control. Without earn- est, unite ‘fort, w D achieve but a halt vie- tory, aba without a state convention such effort will not altalnabie. _— The defeat of the Irish compensation bill In the House of Lords ts a subject that engrosss the attention of the English peopte at present, even to the exclusion of Afghan affairs. The London Neves says the rejectlon of the biil “puts weapons in the hands of the agitat ors,” and the Pall Mali Gazette speaks of the “dangers” incurred by the act of the Lords, The Dublin correspondent of the Times writes that “‘ihere fs a feeling of bitter disappointment and indignation among the supporters of the bul They protest against the action of the House of Lords as an arbitrary interference With the constitutional rights ef the People, as expressed by their representatives in Parlla- ment.” Among the masses of the British people the feeling that the House of Lords exists solely &S a prop to aristocracy, and as a body inimical to the iaterests of all other classes has been {Towing steadily. It ts predicted that the de- Teat Of this bill will lead to an open demand for ‘the abolishment of the Lords. It requires no Prophet to foretell that if a movement to that end should succeed the British throne would ot long survive it. —————~-—__ ‘The political canvass in California 1s to be ‘Waged mainly upon the Chinese tssue, and each Party is now diligently searching the records OF proof that It, in Its organized capacity, was always an enemy of the Mongolian and a friend of the working man. The shrewd managers who direct party affairs trom the national headquarters in New York city are very careful in seeing that all the ant!-Chinese documents go to the racitic coast. In the east where People believe in giving everybody, ‘cluding the Chinamen, a fair chance, the documents tn- tended for circulation tm the extreme west ‘Would do harm. Soa political campaign goes, ‘The managers go in to win, and the devious ‘Ways employed are all considered legitimate. A prominent republican publicly gives assurance ‘that “ we are certain to carry North Carolina,” td @ democratic manager offsets it by an- nouncing that “victory 1s assured for us in ©ulo.” In private conversations they poth laugh over the absurdity of thelr statement, rel Sy, peraps, “we gust emcqurage the plsss $e Cr a A ono assort. ment for a few days Base snooded 45 cents; Perch, 20 ntedoz ALR.
